EXCLUSIVE: Anna Escobedo-Cabral, Treasurer of the United States, Visits San Antonio On August 8th To Advocate for  Social Security Reform

Left to right:  John Montford, Chairman of the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, Anna Escobedo-Cabral, Treasurer of the United States and Elaine Mendoza, Chairwoman of the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

Anna Escobedo Cabral was nominated on July 22, 2004, by President Bush to serve as Treasurer of the United States. She was confirmed by the United States Senate on November 20, 2004.

Joe Solis, a small business-owner, had an opportunity to attend this special meeting last week. He was interviewed in Spanish by Channel 8- Univision about the Social Security Reforms proposed by President Bush.  An estimated 80,000 Spanish speaking viewers watch the 10 p.m. Univision news broadcast. This was the final interview statement by Joe Solis:  The money belongs to us and not the government.

Comments by Secretary of the Treasury John W. Snow

Social Security remains on an unsustainable course, requiring prompt, responsible, and bipartisan action to fix the program for our children and grandchildren. The government has made promises it cannot afford to keep under the current pay-as-you-go system, and President Bush is leading Administration-wide efforts to strengthen and save the 70-year old program.

Americas changing demographics are at the heart of the systems pending insolvency. It used to be that 16 workers paid taxes to support one retiree, but that ratio has dropped to nearly 3-to-1 today and will be 2-to-1 by the time today's young workers retire. By 2017, Social Security will be paying out more in benefits than it takes in. By 2041 when younger workers begin to retire the system will be bankrupt.

Conservative Icon Richard Viguerie Blasts GOP

In an open letter addressed to "Conservative Leaders," Viguerie writes: "It has become increasingly clear that Republicans in Washington care little or nothing about grassroots conservatives and the values they hold dear.

"After we spent decades defeating the Rockefeller wing of the Party, it seems we have a new enemy - the Washington wing of the GOP. They're not just wasting money; they're actually massively growing government in direct contravention of everything Republicans purport to stand for."

Viguerie, a consultant and direct-mail specialist who helped elect Ronald Reagan in 1980, said Republicans are betraying conservatives who believe in limited government, lower taxes and modest spending.

"The highway bill just passed by our Republican Congress (with the president's blessing), at $286.4 BILLION is the most expensive public works legislation ever passed," he writes.

"The National Taxpayers Union put it best when describing one of the more offensive projects in the bill: $220 million for a 5.9-mile bridge connecting Gravina Island (population 50) to the Alaskan mainland. The cost of the bridge alone would be enough to buy every island resident his own personal Lear jet.'

"One can only be reminded of 1998 when the Republican Congress, just four years after taking power, went on a similar spending spree - only to watch grassroots activists desert them in November. The GOP lost House seats in the second midterm election of a Democratic president, a failure almost unheard of in American politics."

Viguerie urges conservatives to speak out about how Republicans have "betrayed" them, and "make clear that our interests, as conservatives, are being seriously undermined by this new political class: long-serving Republicans in Washington more interested in keeping power than doing right by the Constitution and the American people."

He asks: "When will the GOP learn that the party's success is directly tied to the level of commitment from its core base of conservative voters and activists?"

And he warns:

"If these Washington Republicans continue to prove to conservatives that there really is no difference between them and Democrats ... they are headed for a disappointing election night in 2006."

Texans For Lawsuit Reform P.A.C. Endorses Governor Rick  Perry

Dear Friends,

Texans for Lawsuit Reform Political Action Committee (TLR PAC) has endorsed the candidacy of Governor Rick Perry for obvious reasons. No Governor in America has done more to correct abuses in the civil justice system than Governor Perry.

At a time when a few dozen plaintiff lawyers are spending millions of dollars to weaken the resolve of elected officials in tackling reforms to eliminate costly and unnecessary litigation, Governor Perry stands tall advocating common sense legislation to stop predatory and destructive lawsuits from hurting the people of Texas.

If you would like more information on Governor Perrys campaign or who wish to help his re-election effort, please visit www.perry06.com/org/tlr/.  Join us in supporting Governor Perry, a true tort reform advocate.

Thanks to Governor Perry, Texas now stands as an example to the entire nation of how the right political leadership can change a states civil justice system from one that primarily profits a small group of unscrupulous lawyers to one that serves the public.

The Texas health care system was a crisis on the verge of collapse when Governor Perry led the way to stop thousands of unmerited lawsuits that were driving so many doctors out of practice that large parts of Texas were without the services of critically needed obstetricians, neurosurgeons, and other health care specialists. Since passage of House Bill 4 in 2003, medical liability rates have dropped for the first times in decades, private insurers have returned to the Texas marketplace, physicians have returned to practices, and hospitals have expanded services across the state.

Medical malpractice litigation reform was just one part of sweeping civil justice reform made possible by passage of HB 4. Numerous elements of this legislation have since been copied by other states. This model legislation simply would not have passed without the strong hand of Governor Perry.

Governor Perry also worked for and signed into law this year landmark legislation that ends asbestos and silica lawsuit abuses that have broken scores of Texas companies, cost thousands of Texas jobs, undermined respect for the law, and prevented many truly impaired persons from receiving full and timely recoveries.

When one considers that this outstanding record of accomplishment has been backed up with Governor Perrys appointment of 92 highly qualified and skilled lawyers to fill judicial vacancies in recent years, it is clear that Rick Perry has more than earned our support.

Sincerely,

Richard J. Trabulsi, Jr., Chairman

Texans For Lawsuit Reform PAC

Commentary By Place 5 State Board of Education Member Dan Montgomery On The Issue Of School Finance And The Texas Legislature

School administrators and local school boards want the state to fund textbooks and provide money for teacher salary increases. Otherwise, they want more money in the form of a blank check. They want this money with no mandates as to how the it is spent.

There are two problems with this approach. First, textbooks have always been provided by the state and small pay raises for teachers are routine but cannot be expected to produce reform. Second, most Texans want to see results for the additional monies that they provide from taxation.

As conservatives, we tend to favor local control (the blank check approach), but this clashes with another important conservative hallmark, fiscal responsibility. In other words, we want local school boards to have more authority but we also want to make sure that our tax dollars produce results. We may want more money for education but, even more, we want more education for our money.

The legislature is almost equally divided. Democrats and many rural Republicans (in districts where the schools are the lifeblood of the community) tend to lean toward local control and favor little more than raising salaries and providing textbooks. Urban and suburban Republicans seem to want more state mandates that they think will improve education results. As a result, there is gridlock with no solution in sight. So the courts will probably decide the issue, and most legislators will then cry, "judicial activism".

As for the tax reform issue, most Texans want lower property taxes. But, in order to make up for the loss in revenue, we have been informed that people making less than $100,000 (most of us) would pay more in consumption taxes than we would save in lower property taxes. But there are really no other taxes other than the income tax which, practically speaking, is not an option in Texas. Closing franchise tax loopholes doesn't provide enough money and taxing services is really nothing more than an income or payroll tax. So there seems to be no legislative solution to this issue as well.

Short of a comprehensive court directive, I see nothing happening other than another "band-aid" approach to this extremely complex issue.

Texas Toll Party-Just Like The Boston Tea Party

San Antonio Doesn't Need to be Tolled

We can all agree, doing nothing with regard to our highways is NOT an option. In fact, taxpayers expect our elected leaders to build and maintain infrastructure in the most cost-effective and expedient fashion. It's fascinating to watch unelected bureaucracies pine away about how there's not enough money for roads. Haven't we heard this tired ol' song so many times before? What a surprise! Government bureaucrats think we're not being taxed enough.

The lottery was going to fix all of our public school troubles. Look no further than the school finance mess and it's clear the lottery was no silver bullet for education. Well, tolls aren't the silver bullet for our infrastructure woes either. One thing TxDOT neglects to tell you is that our gas tax revenues have steadily increased over the past 20 years from $500 million in 1984 to $5.5 billion today. An increase in number of vehicles means an increase in gallons of gas and thus an increase in gas tax revenue. In November, San Antonians just passed a sales tax hike to pay for highway improvements, but TxDOT insists we need to pay tolls, too! How much is enough folks?

Rather than ask our bloated government to cut the fat or actually demonstrate leadership and restore the 25% of the gas tax that goes to schools and fight for our fair share of federal highway money (San Antonians send in $100 million more in gas taxes than we get back each year), our elected leaders send TxDOT out there to increase taxes on 281 users in order to fund toll lanes for those who use Loop 1604. Oh, but tolls are a user-pays-for-the-road system, mind you. These good folks actually take us for fools! How 'bout that? Members of our own Party have figured out a wealth redistribution scheme they can promote.

TxDOT estimates only 43% of current 281 drivers will be able to use the toll road. That relegates 57% of current 281 users to less efficient, time sucking frontage roads to get to work. YET, they have a funded plan that should already be under construction as a free road that EVERYONE can use! The traffic woes in that part of town aren't being addressed for one reason and one reason only: they want unlimited toll REVENUE!

We need to be asking why our elected officials aren't holding TxDOT's feet to the fire on this. They claim that the $48 million to fund the 281 road improvements disappeared into some unnamed black hole, and we're supposed to just trust them to know best and step aside so that they can come in and toll us FOREVER instead.

If you're like me, you'll stand by the wisdom of one of our greatest presidents, Ronald Wilson Reagan, and trust but verify. Before we unleash a $1.3 billion toll project and levy permanent toll taxes on the pocketbooks of San Antonians, shouldn't we get an independent review of this toll mammoth by an unbiased third party with the taxpayers best interest in mind?

This is highway robbery and it's time for a taxpayer revolt! Go to www.TexasTollParty.com to contact your elected officials and ask for an independent review of this toll plan in one email!

The Texas Home School Coalition is dedicated to serving the home-school
community of Texas and promoting a greater knowledge, understanding and
acceptance of home education in our state.

The Texas Home School Coalition was established as a political action committee (PAC) in 1986 by Kirk McCord of Hearth and Home Ministries and the late Brad Chamberlain. Because of the numerous law suits against home schoolers across the state and harmful legislation being introduced in Austin, they saw a need for a state-wide political organization to work for the rights of home schoolers in the state of Texas. The founders, believing government restriction could not be justified academically or socially, formed the THSC PAC to oppose any regulation of home education in Texas.

In 1995, THSC incorporated as an educational non-profit organization because most of THSC's work is dealing with disseminating information to the public and to home educators. Its mission is to serve and inform the home school community and promote home education in Texas. THSC, maintaining that participation in the political arena is vital to maintaining their freedoms, continues to encourage home educators to be active in the political process.

In February of 1998, HOPE for Texas merged with the Texas Home School Coalition. At this point, THSC also became responsible for helping new home schoolers across the state as well as maintaining a network of information and communication between and among the leadership of regional home school organizations, local support groups, and individual home schooling families.

In 2000, the Texas Home School Coalition Association incorporated as a 501 (c)(4) advocacy organization for Texas home school families. Its mission is to serve and protect home school families in Texas.
