Congressman Lamar Smith Draws Line
In The Sand: NO GUEST WORKER PROGRAM (Friends This Is Getting Good!) |
|
Jones Urges President to Better Enforce Immigration Laws:
Posted by
Jason Saine
on 2005/10/8 16:04:04. Lincoln Tribune
Newspaper
Washington, D.C.- In a letter yesterday to President Bush, Third
District Representative Walter B. Jones joined Reps. John Hostettler
(IN), Lamar Smith (TX), Tom Tancredo (CO) and other Members of
Congress in calling for better enforcement of current immigration
laws before a guest worker program is considered.
Citing their concern over the neglectful enforcement of current
immigration laws, Members of Congress sent the following letter to
President Bush:
We write as Members of Congress concerned about immigration.
Recently there has been much discussion of new guest worker or
temporary worker programs. However, we believe that there should be
no new guest worker program or any expansion of the number of lawful
residents in our country until the Executive Branch better enforces
current immigration laws.
History has shown that enforcement provisions are ignored and
under-funded while guest worker and amnesty provisions are always
implemented.
The 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act contained amnesties for
farm workers and other illegal aliens as well as employer sanctions
and other enforcement provisions. Unfortunately, the amnesties were
carried out and the enforcement was not.
The 1996 Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act
also contained enforcement provisions that were not implemented. For
instance, the bill mandated the implementation of a national
exit-entry tracking system for all aliens. Nine years later the
exit-entry system is still not near completion.
Today an estimated 12 to 20 million illegal aliens are in the United
States. They know that if they successfully enter the country and
find a job, they will likely be able to stay for the rest of their
lives because the government has shown little interest in enforcing
its own laws. Employers also know that once they hire an illegal
alien, it is unlikely that they will ever be investigated or
prosecuted for doing so. Enforcement of the laws against illegal
immigration and employing illegal aliens is necessary.
The American people need to see that the current laws against
illegal immigration are being enforced before any guest worker
program can be considered.

"On K Street Conservatism" |
The following excerpts were
written by George F. Will (Newsweek, October 17, 2005)
“DeLay’s troubles and his party’s,
may multiply with coming revelations about the seamy career of uber
lobbyist Jack Abramoff. He is emblematic of DeLay’s faux
conservatism- K Street conservatism. That is Republican power in the
service of lobbyists who, in their K Street habitat, are in the
service of rent seekers- interests eager to bend public power for
their private advantage.”
“Since 2000 the number of
registered lobbyists in Washington has more than doubled, from
16,342 to 34,785. They have not been attracted to the seat of
government, like flies to honey, for the purpose of limiting
government.”

Balcones Heights
Republicans- God Bless Mayor Jim Craven |

We would like to thank Mayor Jim
Craven for addressing the founding meeting of the Balcones Heights
Republicans. You are going to love this. After two long years of
negotiations with the city council, Mayor Craven has finally
convinced the city of Balcones Heights to completely ELIMINATE
his salary. That is right. Mayor Craven told us that he is there
to serve and not earn a paycheck. I also fell out of my chair when
he told us this news.
That
is the servant leadership that

The Fiscal Mess: Or Is It An Opportunity? The Economist October
1st-7th, 2005 (Article Segments) |
A useful battle
about the budget is raging within the Republican Party
“The past couple of weeks has seen
a near revolution among conservative Republicans, who are apoplectic
about Mr. Bush’s promise to spend ‘whatever it takes’ to rebuild New
Orleans while making no effort to pay for that spending with cuts
elsewhere. They are also furious with their leaders in Congress.”
“Jeff Flake, a congressman from
Arizona, wrote in the Wall Street Journal that ‘the Republican
Congress’s failure to discipline itself is sending us all down a
flower-strewn path to financial insolvency’.”
“So why are conservatives
suddenly so concerned? The Katrina spending binge has come only
weeks after the highway bill, which already had them hopping.”
“The big question, of course, is
whether this harrumphing actually leads to any change in America’s
budge policy. Could this be a tipping point? The early signs are no,
but there may be some effect on reconstructing spending.”
“But despite the conservative
ranting, neither the White House nor congressional leaders have
offered any concrete spending cuts.”
“Top lawmakers are busier lecturing
the conservative renegades about the need for party unity.”

Governor Perry
Announces Comprehensive Border Security Plan For Texas From The: |
AMERICANS FOR PROSPERITY -
Gov. Perry
Says Protecting Border is Federal Responsibility, but State Cannot
Wait for Needed Reform --
This week Gov.
Perry announced a security plan for the Texas Mexico-border region.
Perry's Border
Security Plan consists of the following six action areas:
1.) Fully
support local law enforcement and Operation Linebacker.
2.) Reduce
violent crime along the border.
3.) Accelerate
radio interoperability.
4.) Develop a
Bi-lateral All-Hazards Response Plan.
5.) Leverage the
expertise and experience of the National Guard to provide training
and participate in response exercises.
6.) Pass
legislative reforms, including the expansion of state wiretap
authority.
Perry called on
the federal government to hire many more border patrol agents;
expand the use of technology at, and designate the entire border
region in Texas a high-threat area so border communities have the
same eligibility for homeland security funds as our large urban
areas; and significantly expand federal detention facilities.
The Governor’s move
came as Capitol Hill is bracing itself for a major debate over
immigration reform. Last week, 82 House members sent a letter to the
administration expressing their opposition to any "guest worker"
program until something is done to address enforcement issues. The
letter was authored by Representatives John Hostettler (R-IN), Tom
Tancredo (R-CO), and Lamar Smith (R-TX).
The letter concluded by citing public security as a major issue that
demands attention: "We have lost control of our borders and
endangered the lives of Americans by not enforcing immigration laws.
For example, the current 'catch and release' policy enables 85
percent of illegal immigrants who are apprehended to go free."

Schuylar Crist of South Texas
Republicans Needs Your Help To Go To Washington,
D.C. And Attend The Conservative Political Action Conference |
DEADLINE FOR
FUNDING: November 1st, 2005!!
Our own Schuylar Crist needs your
financial support to make a very important trip to our nation’s
capitol February 9th-11th. The 33rd Conservative Political Action
Conference is a project of the American Conservative Union
Foundation along with Human Events and the Young American’s
Foundation. CPAC is also founded by former U.S. House Speaker Newt
Gingrich.
He will be
learning a great deal from the best conservative minds in the
country such as Vice-President Dick Cheney, U.S. House Speaker
Dennis Hastert, and Senators Mitch McConnell and George Allen. There
will be hands-on sessions from grassroots activism to cutting edge
media strategies. There will also be national TV, radio, and
newspaper reporters covering the entire conference.
While there, Schuylar expects
to:
1.) Recruit nationally
recognized speakers for our Rough Riders of Bexar County Educational
Series
2.) Build new relationships with
national conservative organizations and individuals for South Texas
Republicans, P.A.C.
3.) Utilize these contacts to
gain support in terms of resources and finances for the P.A.C., and
our South Texas Candidates at the state and federal levels
4.) Demonstrate the strength of
the Republican Party in South Texas at the grassroots level
The costs to attend this event
will be about $1,400. The package to attend all 3 conference
days (including the Presidential and Reagan dinners) and gain
admittance to the exhibit halls/book signings, will cost $425. The
hotel room on location (Omni Shoreham in D.C.) will cost $555 (plus
tax) for all 3 nights. Roundtrip airfare is expected to run about
$400 (plus tax).
It takes only 28 people giving $50, 14 people giving $100, 7 people giving
$200. Of course any amount you can give will put him that much
closer to his goal.

Readers React To Our
Toll Road Position |
Joe,
Thanks 4 including
both sides of the Toll Road Issue. Keep up the good work I do enjoy
reading, cussing and discussing the South Texas Republican weekly.
Great Job
______
Joe:
We admire you for
taking the stand that an informed electorate is what we need
regarding the toll road issues. We understand you have taken some
heat from the Republican Party. Well, I normally vote Republican but
I would like A-L-L the facts before I make up my mind.
______
Thanks to people
with conviction and guts to do what is correct. T-H-A-N-K-S ! From
a couple in Corpus Christi!
______
I just received an
email from SA Toll Party. They said that you are taking a stand to
report all sides of the toll issue, even though your newsletter is
Republican. I truly appreciate your willingness to do that. Thank
you so much.
_______
I am very concerned
about our political system right now. Maybe the way it has always
been is finally coming to light for the public to see. That is a
very good thing!
______
Congrats on standing tall and presenting both
sides of the toll issue.

Bexar Democrats Scramble
To-Register Katrina Victims
UPDATE - SINCE THIS LINK WAS POSTED THE BEXAR
DEMOCRATS' PAGE HAS BEEN CHANGED - THIS IS A COPY
South Texas
Republicans Commentary: Our readership shot up 65% after we
broke this story Thursday morning. Thanks for the numerous e-mails
about this amazing story. Here is one message from one of our
readers:
“I suggest that the
Republican Party in Texas immediately swings into action with
LAWYERS, and recover from San Antonio and FEMA, the initial
paperwork when the LA Katrina victims stated where they lived in
LA. This information could be used to discredit the newly registered
votes of these people. If this not agreeable, then the Republican
Party should immediately go to KellyUSA and register these people as
LA citizens and get them to sign Absentee Forms. This would also
prevent them from registering in TX.”
We would like to
thank one of our readers for contacting the Texas Secretary of State
about this issue.

Wisdom From Ronald
Reagan |
“Government is the only business in
the world which can continue to exist while ignoring every sensible
rule of economics. When a business or an individual spends more than
it makes, it goes bankrupt. When government does it, it sends you
the bill. And when government does it for forty years the bill comes
in two ways- higher taxes and inflation. Make no mistake about
it: inflation is a tax and not by accident. Lenin once said,
“Through inflation government can quietly and unobservedly
confiscate the prosperity of its citizens.”

A "Blast From The
Past" |
The following segment by Robbie
Borchers of New Braunfels is featured in Grassroots Women: A
Memoir of the Texas Republican Party
by Meg McKain Grier (www.politicalgrassroots.org).
“The Tom Loeffler campaign took
about a year of my life. We were absolutely determined that this was
our chance to get a Republican congressman. So here in Comal County
I started in ’77 inviting people to events for him here at home. It
would be breakfast or cocktails or something just for people to come
in and meet him. When he came to town, I would take him place to
place for days. He stayed sometimes two or three days. We would just
hit everybody that we could think of to visit. He was a delightful
candidate. I never forget that after the parties he was always there
to help with the cleanup and always insisted that he’d take the
garbage out.”

Tolling Authority Illegally Conducts Political Survey With Public
Funds |
|

Skewed results
leave out the most pertinent information public needs to make
informed decision
The Alamo RMA (tolling
authority) has crossed the line. They have ILLEGALLY spent public
money to conduct a political survey that polled registered voters
and asked questions about party affiliation and a person's voting
patterns (see Government Code- CHAPTER 556. POLITICAL ACTIVITIES BY
CERTAIN PUBLIC ENTITIES AND INDIVIDUALS http://www.capitol.state.tx.us/statutes/gv.toc.htm).
What does a person's voting preferences have to do with public
reaction to tolling our freeways? I'd venture to guess it's because
this toll plan is truly all about politics and has very little to do
with actually building or maintaining roads or with improving
mobility. This toll scheme is being pushed from the very highest
levels of state government to create a whole new tax on
FREEways we've already paid for.
Case in point, TxDOT's original
plan for improvements on US 281 north of Loop 1604 was to put
overpasses at the stoplights at a pricetag of $48 million. Now, to
build that same stretch of road as a toll way, $83 million. Why the
outlandish cost? First of all, they're going to bulldoze a perfectly
good highway and repave it so they can claim they're new lanes in
order to toll them. Then, to skirt around the statute about
converting existing highways into toll roads, they have to build at
least 6 lanes of access roads (which has been increased to 8 lanes
recently).
Stick with me here. So to turn
this highway into a toll way they're going to build 14 lanes of
pavement only to funnel them back down to 6 lanes at Loop 1604. Does
that sound like common sense traffic relief? TxDOT is clearly
overlooking the simple, sensible, more cost effective solution to
our congestion problems in order to push a whole new toll tax. And
now with their push poll, the RMA is spending public money to "sell"
the public on something they clearly don't want (in their own
survey, 73% said that they DO NOT WANT TOLL LANES!).
If you don't want this new
government entitlement, go to
http://www.TexasTollParty.com to find out more and to say
"no" to our leaders who have brought us this mess. Also, vote "NO"
on Propositions 1 & 9 that will give an open-ended blank check to
private rail corporations and to extend the terms for Regional
Mobility Authority (tolling authority) board members from the two
years allowed in the Constitution to SIX years.

“Don’t
Aim At Success…” by Victor E. Frankl |
“Again and again I therefore
admonish my students both in Europe and America: ‘Don’t aim at
success- the more you aim at it and make it a target, the more you
are going to miss it. For success, like happiness, cannot be
pursued; it must ensue, and it only does so as the unintended
side-effects of one’s personal dedication to a cause greater than
oneself or as the by-product of one’s surrender to a person other
than oneself. Happiness must happen, and the same holds for success:
you have to let it happen by not caring about it. I want you to
listen to what your conscience commands you to do and go on to carry
it out to the best of your knowledge. Then you will live to see that
in the long run – in the long run, I say! – success will follow you
precisely because you had forgotten to think of it.”
From Man’s Search For
Meaning” (Preface to the 1984 edition)

"Americans'
Unique Ability To Form Associations..." |
Segment by Rick Santorum, “It
Takes a Family: Conservatism and the Common Good”
“Tocqueville didn’t credit
America’s success to geography, to its abundant natural resources,
or even to its laws and political leaders. Rather, he largely
credited what he saw as Americans’ unique ability to form
associations, a habit of building bonds between citizens to both
achieve something beyond ourselves and to find a fulfillment
unavailable to us as individuals.”
