Breaking News: State Representative Frank Corte, Jr.  Of Bexar County May Be Challenged By A Democrat!

We have received an unconfirmed report that Democrat Larry Stallings allegedly will be challenging State Representative Frank Corte in 2006.  South Texas Republicans will be providing more information about Mr. Stallings and this new development. A Bexar County elected official, who is a Democrat, provided this unofficial report.

Lt. Colonel Frank Corte is one amazing individual, in our opinion. He has a spine that’s as solid as platinum and a passion for conservatism that’s unsurpassed. We salute Rep. Corte for his leadership on the eminent domain law signed by Governor Rick Perry. His position on protecting the unborn has never wavered over the years. Representative Corte continues to preach that we cannot simply let superintendents mug us for $10 billion dollars when high school students are still graduating with Third World reading scores.

The man has served his country in uniform, without hesitation, when his nation called him. Let there be no doubt that Representative Corte is a major target because of his conservative values and ideals. It is time for us to stand up for Representative Corte when he calls upon us to serve in his campaign.

Toni Anne Dashiell Elected 1st Vice President Of Texas Federation Of Republican Women

We would like to congratulate Toni Anne Dashiell for being elected to the 2nd highest-ranking position within the Texas Federation of Republican Women. The election took place two weeks ago in Corpus Christi at the state convention. Toni Anne is one of the co-founders of South Texas Republicans. One month ago, she decided to focus on her TFRW activities, so we are sad to report that she is no longer on our team. This wonderful lady helped up launch this P.A.C. three years ago with financial and moral support.

Most of you who know Toni Anne will agree that she is one of the greatest individuals you will ever meet. We wish Toni Anne the best and congratulate her on this tremendous achievement. (For the record, she continues to provide very honest, frank and direct comments about our work.  We love Toni Anne!!)

Bill Thornton Vs. Terri Hall: You Won't Like This One

South Texas Republicans is presenting the two sides of the Toll Road issue. Most of our postings have been from the Texas Toll Party. We have published a few pro-toll pieces that have been sent to us. The following comments will astound you and they demonstrate why the Pro-Toll folks might end up losing this battle.

Last week, I heard Bill Thornton, Chairman of the Regional Mobility Authority, at a local business meeting. (Mr. Thornton is a former Mayor of San Antonio.) Mr. Thornton began his pro-Toll discussion by saying that ‘the other side is being led by “some mother of 5 who homes schools her children in Comal County.”’ He was referring to Terri Hall, the organizer of the Texas Toll Party.

I was dismayed when I heard this. Why is it necessary for a public official to disparage a political adversary because she has made the decision to home school her children? Why is she a bad person because she and her husband have decided to raise 5 children? What is wrong with a citizen of Comal County organizing voters in the Hill County and Northern Bexar County? Don’t we live in a free country?

Mr. Thornton, it is obvious you do not like Mrs. Terri Hall and her opposition to Toll Roads. The personal lives of your opposition have no place in this political dialogue. If you continue to use this kind of insulting language against conservatives in your public speeches, get ready for a battle that you will never win. Texas has changed. Get with the program before the Governor of Texas fires you.

Momentum And Support Continues To Grow For Governor Perry Re-election Campaign

San Antonio Police Officers Association Vice President Jim Jones said, “Governor Perry displayed true leadership and stalwart support for law enforcement by signing into law bills that give all police officers due process and put into place the principles and mechanisms for police officers to meet and confer with their employers about wages, benefits, and working conditions. His support for public safety and police officers across Texas has been unequaled and unwavering, and the San Antonio Police Officers' Association endorses Governor Perry for re-election.”

Republican Marialyn Barnard Will Face Democrat Associate Judge Peter Sakai For 225th District Court In Bexar County

(Judge Specia of the 225th District Court announced recently that he would not seek reelection, but would serve out his term. The 225th bench will be an open seat.)

Democrat Associate Judge Peter Sakai has agreed to be represented by the GTO ad agency, headed by Alice Trevino. This firm is working with several other politicians, including former Congressman Ciro Rodriquez. Our outspoken friends at the San Antonio Express-News love Judge Sakai. Expect Judge Sakai to continue to receive positive media coverage from Gloria Padilla, Jaime Castillo, Lynell Burkett, and Bruce Davidson of the Express-News. (We will be monitoring this positive press for our readers.)

Republican Marialyn Barnard is one of the most dynamic, intelligent, and grassroots driven candidates we have had in years. A few of our recent judicial appointees at the courthouse have had zero involvement with the Republican Party prior to their appointments. Mrs. Barnard is the complete opposite. Over the years, she has enthusiastically supported numerous Republican candidates, officials, clubs and organizations, including South Texas Republicans.

Beyond all of that, the woman has a heart of gold. You can sense it when you are in her presence. She irradiates honesty, intelligence, authenticity, and a desire to serve the public that I have not seen in years. It is also the way she conducts herself. Mrs. Barnard is very articulate and a class act in every sense of the word.

This strong woman needs our full and complete support. She recently served as an officer of the Republican Business Women of Bexar County. Mrs. Barnard will be publishing her bio and photo soon. Friends, this will be one of the most important and exciting judicial races in Bexar County history.

Let me repeat, Marialyn Barnard will need our help because the Democrats and the San Antonio Express-News will be our opponents in this race.  We hold the key to success in this race.

Former State Representative Ken Mercer Announces Candidacy For State Board Of Education, Place 5

(Bexar County) Former State Representative Ken Mercer (R) has announced his candidacy for the State Board of Education (SBOE) District #5. Former Rep. Mercer remarked: "The office I am seeking represents 1.5 million Texans from 12 counties. This is a 60% plus Republican leaning seat that deserves a real conservative with real conservative Texas’ family values. "

Mercer continued: "The call I hear is very clear. The elected Republican officials who encourage me to run want a proven leader who will work to restore power to the SBOE and not work to undermine our Republican platform."

Mercer concluded: "I have earned the powerful endorsements of several: a) Republican members of the Texas House, b) Republican members of the SBOE, and c) many members of the State Republican Executive Committee (SREC). Next week I will begin unveiling those endorsements."

A Letter About South Texas Republicans

Your newsletter is awesome! I love the semi-aggressive style. That's what we need. I really believe that people are longing to rally around a strong organization like yours. They're certainly not getting that from our elected officials. They are so weak and ineffective. I could write a book on this.

I was especially proud of your speech that you gave on the future of the Republican Party. My favorite part was "Our party will grow and continue to be dominant when we realize that there is no such thing as a "minority" republican...we are Americans first."

Keep it up. You are making a difference.

The Letter Senator Cornyn Did Not Send

Commentary by South Texas Republicans: Senator John Cornyn did not respond to our open letter. We are publishing the letter he should have sent. It is no surprise that Senator Cornyn did not respond to our grassroots appeal. In our opinion, the Senator wasted a great opportunity to shine. We are disappointed, but not surprised by his indifference. The following letter is fictional and we are the authors.

The Office of Senator John Cornyn

Washington, D.C.

Dear Joe:

Thank you for your open letter dated November 17. With all due respect, you are a real jerk. Yes, I said it for the whole world to read.  Don’t you realize that a U.S. Senator has the power to build a toxic waste dump in your backyard? [Note to staff:  Ask Joe for his home address.]  Listen, I know you are trying to be a big man down there in Bexar County by advocating for grassroots Republicans, small business owners and conservatives. I want you to listen to me good because I am not going to repeat myself. I love grassroots Republicans!!! Why would you think otherwise?

I’m going to admit that I have not provided the best leadership in grassroots outreach in the past few years. You really do have a point when you thoughtfully consider all the angles in your open letter. (Ugh, I’m still so frustrated that you had to publish the darn letter to a few thousand people. Okay, breathe…) I understand that getting through my office bureaucracy in San Antonio, Austin and Washington D.C. is as futile as explaining to a liberal Democrat that liberating 50,000,000 Iraqis is a good thing. Good God, the voter turnout in Iraq is better than ours. Okay, let me get to the point.

This is my action plan: Step 1) I am breaking down the state into six regions for immediate grassroots outreach.  Every quarter, I vow to host at least one Town Hall meeting with my political base.  We will provide hot dogs, pizza and soft drinks for every guest.  I will even pass out the cute gift items with my name.  My political director will make sure every SREC member, county chair and Republican grassroots supporter is invited.  I will even take off my coat jacket and LISTEN to you for two full hours.  There will be no charge for these meetings and I am going to ask you to bring the kids, grandma, grandpa and the potential Republicans.  We will rotate towns and cities and help you negotiate for inexpensive bus rides for large groups.

Step 2) Every region will have a task force made up of Republican leaders and grassroots supporters. We will have one goal. How can my office be more responsive to grassroots Republicans? I will have a blog and web site that will amaze you. (By the way, have you seen the Perry Alliance web page? Those folks in Austin are doing some good stuff.)

Joe, don’t you realize that I was once an officer of the Republican Men’s Club in Bexar County? We come from the same place. I absolutely believe in this kind of grassroots outreach. I sincerely apologize to you and other grassroots Republicans for giving you the impression that I am out of touch or an elitist. I should try to listen less to my D.C. and Austin “professional” political advisors in the future. I am NOW going to prove to you and others that I do get it.

Enough with all of the serious talk and let me close by saying that I was only kidding about putting a toxic waste dump in your backyard. (I just know that I freaked you out.)  I am going to punish you with something much worse. I am naming you to be the Chairman of all six regions in the great state of Texas. Let’s see what kind of big man you really are. My staff will be in contact tomorrow morning with the paperwork.

Best Regards,

Senator John Cornyn

P.S. Did you hear about my speech to the Texas Federation of Republican Women in Corpus last week? I did not mention the guest worker program once. That’s right!!  Thanks for letting me know that our grassroots friends are not exactly sold on this until we get our crazy border under control. And, yes, you still are a jerk in my book.

Readers Respond To Our Open Letter To Senator John Cornyn

Joe,

I liked [your letter]. You are rattling cages and they need to be rattled. Once those guys go to Washington DC, they become complacent fat cats just waiting for their pensions and forgetting why they are even there. The senators are the worst. (Although both Cornyn and Hutchinson almost always vote the way I would). Good article about Cornyn.

#2

Joe,

I am disappointed by your open letter to Senator Cornyn. While I think it is natural for the home base to feel a little neglected when one of our own moves on to bigger and better things, we should continue to stand solidly behind him and trust that his ties to Bexar County are deep rooted. He needs to serve the entire state in order to keep his position in Washington, and God knows we need him there.

Reply to Joe Solis:

Reference U.S. Senator John Cornyn's schedule, etc.

Joe, I'm sure you are well-meaning in your desire to have a one-on-one with the Senator, but frankly I prefer he spend as much time in D.C. as possible. There are some real evil people up there and I like the way he does his job of defending us against the special interests that hang around the Capital all the time.

With all the communication outlets available I'm sure you can find a way to reach the Senator with your concerns. As a longtime member of "The Base", I've never had any difficulty reaching any Republican member of the Texas Delegation in Washington or any part of the Republican leadership if I wished to express my opinion or ask for assistance.

You might do us all a favor by listing those people and issues that have not been adequately addressed by Senator Cornyn and his very competent staff.

Yours truly,

Jim Lunz

The Senator knows that we will be 100% behind him when he comes up for re-election in 4 years, and we realize that it is important for him to garner support from the broad electorate in the meantime.

He definitely knows the power of his base, and we will not do anything to lessen that!

Candidate for Comptroller Susan Combs Campaign Update

The Texas Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) Endorses Commissioner Susan Combs for Texas Comptroller

November 17, 2005

Austin, Texas – The Texas Building Owners and Managers Association has endorsed Commissioner Susan Combs in her bid for Texas Comptroller. Texas BOMA President Ray Mackey applauded Commissioner Combs for her proven leadership and commitment to public service.

“Susan Combs has a proven track record as an outstanding public servant, first as Assistant District Attorney, then as a member of the Texas House of Representatives, and most recently as Commissioner of Agriculture, a post she currently holds. She has successfully promoted rural economic development and Texas agricultural products,” said Mackey. “Her experience and leadership abilities make her well qualified to serve as the state’s Comptroller.”

The Texas Building Owners and Managers Association, founded in 1938, now has more than 2,000 members and represents the interests of owners and managers of commercial real estate in the State of Texas. Collectively, Texas BOMA members own and manage upwards of 661 million square feet of space.

Toll Roads A Scheme To Merge North And South America?

Sounds too nutty to be true, but the idea seems backed-up by a recent news clip in the October 28 issue of the San Antonio Business Journal (page 9, in the “Week at a Glance” not available by link) that describes Kelly USA as the new "Port of San Antonio for trade with Mexico." Councilman Art Hall has been instrumental in this (noted in a previous article in the San Antonio Business Journal), which explains his vote AGAINST the PEOPLE when he voted down an independent audit of the toll plans in August. Here's what the CEO of Kelly USA said in the clip: "We are joining forces with Mexico to develop multimodal corridors that will be mutually beneficial to each partner." Note the term "corridors"...that means toll roads. Note the word "partner." How cozy and chummy for these parties and how detrimental and costly for the taxpayers!
