Commentary by South Texas
Republicans: We admire the quiet strength, integrity and values
of Commissioner Jerry Patterson. Thousands respect him for being
bold, innovative and steadfast in his beliefs. Three years ago, I
was in a restaurant with my accountant who casually informed me that
he had two guns on his person. His wife had a gun in her delicate
handbag. He also had another one in his car to be 100% secure.
(Yes, the two of them had all the required permits.) As you can
imagine, I felt safe and quite secure as I ate my hamburger that
evening.
Did Texans experience an
explosion of gun violence after the concealed gun law was passed? Of
course not. The critics were outraged, but one man had faith in
us. Texans have this freedom and extra security in public areas
because Jerry Patterson took a stand. God Bless Texas and God Bless
Commissioner Patterson. Happy Birthday, Commissioner.

A Quick Snapshot Of
Texas Supreme Court Justice David Medina |
Several months ago, Alamo City
Republican Women and South Texas Republicans hosted a “Meet the
Judges” reception for Texas Supreme Court Justice David
Medina. Justice Medina spoke about his extensive grassroots
involvement in the party over the years. He also told us how he
appreciates the work of Republican women, clubs and other grassroots
organizations.
After the interesting
presentation, many of the guests left, but Justice Medina stayed
behind to enjoy the assorted appetizers. He grabbed a plate and DID
NOT go to the front of the room where several affluent looking
guests were seated. Justice Medina went directly to the registration
table where two young volunteers were seated. He removed his jacket
and enjoyed the company of the young volunteers for 20 minutes. He
then returned to Austin after saying goodbye to everybody.
That quick snapshot spoke
volumes of Justice David Medina, in my opinion. Two weeks before our
event, Luis Saenz, Governor Rick Perry’s political director, told
South Texas Republicans that Justice Medina was an incredible person
who is so “down to earth” and jovial. How right he was. The man is a
real prince. We hope you have an opportunity to help his campaign in
2006.

An Update From Commissioner Chris
Mitchell Of Medina County |
South Texas
Republicans had an opportunity to communicate recently with Medina
County Commissioner Chris Mitchell, one of our favorite officials in
the great state of Texas. Here are two important segments from our
dialogue.
Commissioner,
tell us about your first year in office:
I just finished up the fiscal year (a budget I inherited when I took
office in January) with $189,000 surplus. That money now went into
my new budget year to be used where it should be used and that is to
maintain our county roads.
Give us one
example of your style of accountability:
I recently put
equipment purchases out for quotes. I asked for and received faxed
quotes from three local banks, two equipment leasing financial
institutions, state contract lenders and, for grins, one out of
state to compare rates. When I talked to my local treasurer and
presented my paperwork with the bank and the rate, she told me "you
can't do that, we have to use our depository bank." I had already
received an opinion on that from TAC and informed her we do not have
to do that. She said, "Well, we've always done that." Another
official told me, "Well, there's an implied expectation" that we
will use them since they are our depository bank.
My point is
that there should be no implied anything when it comes to spending
taxpayer dollars. My job is to be fiscally accountable and
responsible. It all about finding the best deal for the consumer and
that's what I did.
Commentary by South Texas Republicans:
This proves once again that we have wonderful Republican leadership
in our smaller counties. The dialogue above demonstrates the fact
that we must work hard to recruit, support, and develop a new
generation of leaders like Commissioner Mitchell. We salute the
Commissioner for her tremendous devotion to accountable government
and grassroots fiscal conservatism.

An Appeal
for the Candidate Resources Committee of the
Republican Party of Texas from Joe Solis, SREC, SD 26 |
Dear Friends,
The Candidate
Resources Committee of the Republican Party is charged with providing
support to the Republican candidates and officials. Last year, the
committee distributed thousands of dollars to an assortment of
qualified Republicans who applied for financial support. I was
appointed to sit on this committee by Chairman Tina
Benkiser. Committee members literally read and evaluated numerous
requests by candidates and officials. Committee members distributed
resources after several hours of candid and open discussions about
these individuals.
I share Chairman
Benkiser’s vision that we must continue to grow our party from the
ground up. In other words, we must work extra hard to provide
valuable technical and financial support to our candidates and
officials in the smaller counties. Our state party can make
an impact by allocating $250 to $1,000 donations to candidates for
county judge, county commissioner, or sheriff. These are the future
leaders of Texas who need our help now.
One of my
obligations is to help raise money for our fund. I need your
grassroots financial support so we can continue to help our
candidates who, in turn, are helping us grow our party in the
smaller counties. Your check for $10, $20, $50, $100 or $250 can
make a massive difference.
BONUS:
All donors to this unique campaign will receive a special invitation
to a private reception in 2006. You will have an opportunity to meet
a Texas county commissioner, a Republican Party of Texas leader, and
one elected official. You will hear how your support is making a
difference.
I have a $2,000
goal that I need to reach by December 9. Please contact me today and
let me know how you can help us help a new generation of
conservative Republicans who will need our support in 2006. You can
make a difference today.
Please mail personal checks to: Joe Solis/SREC 26/Republican Party
of Texas
10004 Wurzbach, Suite 269, San Antonio, Texas 78230
Personal checks
must be made payable to the “Republican Party of Texas.” Please
provide name, address, Phone number, e-mail address, occupation and
employer.
Thanks for your
support. Invitations to the private reception will be sent via
e-mail to all donors of this campaign.

People To Watch: Charlie Cantu,
Candidate For Place #2 County Commissioner For Comal County |

Charlie Cantu is running
for County Commissioner position #2 in Comal County. The county
includes the cities of Bulverde and Garden Ridge on I-35. Mr. Cantu
is challenging a Republican incumbent whom he believes needs to be
replaced. Charlie is one of those rare individuals who is passionate
about the Texas Constitution and citizen-driven Government. This is
what Charlie has to say:
“My philosophy of being a public
servant in an elected position:
I believe in our Republican form
of government and, as such, I believe that when the citizens vote
for a representative to speak and work for them at any level of
government, there are specific expectations that must be maintained.
Those expectations are as follows:
1. The citizen is the power,
and must contribute by having a relationship with the
representative.
2. The representative must
foster a working relationship where the citizens’ voice and needs
are always the first priority.”
In the past year, Mr. Cantu was
instrumental in building a formal alliance between the Alamo
Community College District and the local school district. The
partnership has resulted in college courses now being offered in
Bulverde, Texas.
Mr. Cantu is making a difference
in Comal County right now by his active involvement in the
community. We expect him to continue to run a very aggressive
campaign that will focus on the important issues in the county. We
encourage you to meet and learn more about Charlie Cantu by visiting
his web page:
www.cantu06.com
We have not had an opportunity to
meet the current county commissioner.

Joe Solis Addresses Bandera
Republican Women |
You must visit Bandera, Texas, with
your family. What a beautiful town for a one or a two-day visit.
Bandera is only 15 minutes away from Boerne, Texas in the beautiful
Hill County. I was asked to present “The Future of the Republican
Party” speech to members and guests of the Bandera Republican Women
by Kim Hesley, a fellow SREC member.
Bandera is 90% Republican and a
dream to those of us who live in Bexar County, which continues to be
dominated by Democrats. (We are working on that.) I salute the
Bandera Republican Women, who continue to keep the locals motivated
about the Republican Party.
You are making a difference. Thanks
for the invitation and your hard work.

The 5 Luckiest Kids |
Hi Joe.
I met you once at a Republican
Business Meeting – your enthusiasm was great. I enjoy your
newsletter very much, lots of good info in it. I especially liked
your comment about Bill Thorton's rather arrogant attitude toward
Terri Hall. I have been to her grass-roots meetings and the meetings
with city officials about the Toll issue. She cuts their legs out
from under them every time. She has facts, and sometimes uses their
own quotes to back up her argument.
Terri gave a presentation at the Stone Oak/Big Springs Homeowners
meeting last week. She gave a 10-minute explanation about what was
going on and pointed out TxDot's shady plans.
People were shocked and wanted to ask more questions, but
unfortunately she had to leave. Then the lady from TxDot gave her
presentation, the 'packaged power point speech.' But people wanted
to know more about what Terri had said. When the TxDot lady couldn't
defend her position, she was basically heckled out of the room!
Hopefully, those people will now go get involved.
Sorry this is so long, but I need to add one more thing – those are
the luckiest 5 kids in the world.

Join Us for Fundraising Reception Honoring Congressman Lamar Smith |
When: Thursday, December 1, 2005
Time: 5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
Location: Home of Ann and Bob Coleman (San
Antonio, Texas)
Cost: $250
Sponsor Levels: $500, $1,000 & $2,100
R.S.V.P.: Please contact Susan Lilly at
866-789-9223 or
susan@lillyandcompany.com
Commentary by South Texas Republicans: In
our opinion, we predict Congressman Lamar Smith will be the primary
leader on the immigration issue in 2006. The trend at the grassroots
level has moved to the right as a result of the escalating crisis.
Congressman Smith is one of the few representatives who must be
commended for his insistence that we must secure our borders before
we consider or contemplate any fancy new immigration programs. Keep
it going, Congressman! The silent majority is on your side on this
issue.

“An extension of their grass-roots efforts” by Senator Kay Bailey
Hutchison |
“Senator Patty
Murray once commented, ‘Almost every woman I’ve ever met in politics
got into it because she was mad about something.’ Women have been
more likely to join together for organized political action because
of issues that directly influence the well being of their families
and communities. Most of the women now serving in the Senate never
considered political life until one of those issues triggered a
fierce resolve. Government service became a goal and a reality only
as an extension of their grass-roots efforts.”

Counting: The Women of the Senate written with Catherine

Keep Justice Willett On The Texas
Supreme Court |
This August, Governor Rick Perry
appointed Don Willett to serve on the Texas Supreme Court. He
succeeded former Justice Priscilla Owen, who joined the U.S. Court
of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit in June 2005.
Don is Texas’ newest member of the
Court and will stand for election to this seat (Place 2 of the Texas
Supreme Court) in the 2006 Republican Primary on March 7, 2006.
On Thursday, December 8, we are
having a reception for Justice Willett at the home of Rob and Nancy
Finney and hope you will join the “Host Committee” for the event. As
a Host Committee member we would like to include your name on the
invitation and ask for your commitment to give $5,000, $2,500,
$1,000 or $500 to Justice Willett’s campaign.
Before assuming the bench, Don
was Deputy Texas Attorney General for Legal Counsel, where he served
as chief legal adviser to Attorney General Greg Abbott on the
complete array of major legal issues confronting Texas. Prior to
that, he served President George W. Bush as Deputy Assistant
Attorney General for Legal Policy at the U.S. Department of
Justice. Before joining the Justice Department, he served as Special
Assistant to the President in the White House.
Justice Willett is a native
Texan, who grew up in the small town of Talty (population 32), near
the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, and earned a triple major BBA from Baylor
University and a J.D. with honors along with an M.A. in political
science from Duke University.
Serving on Texas’ highest court, Justice Willett believes his role
is to strictly interpret the Constitution and laws of this country
and state, but he will not hesitate to honor his oath to preserve,
protect and defend constitutional rights that have made our country
free.
We
look forward to seeing you at the reception on December 8.
Sincerely,
Ricardo G. Cedillo, Nancy & Rob Finney, Murray Johnston, Cyndi

Candidate for Comptroller Susan Combs Campaign Update |
Dear
South Texas Republicans:I can’t
thank you enough for your friendship and support through the years
as your Agriculture Commissioner. When I travel across Texas, it's
always great to see a friendly face and to know that you’re
available for advice and counsel. I know that I couldn't do it
without you.
The responses, as I prepare to run for
Comptroller, are exceeding every expectation and I am honored that
so many have volunteered their support from every corner of the
state. That is, I believe, due in large part to your efforts at the
grassroots level.
My husband, Joe, and I walked door to door in
Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for the presidential campaign. I am absolutely
convinced that the efforts of grassroots volunteers across this
country were the single most effective political strategy employed.
That is why I am asking you today to be part
of my campaign team for the primary and general elections as I run
for Comptroller.
There are several ways you can get involved.
Please select your area of interest. Of course, you can be involved
in more ways than one! Visit all links that apply. If you would like
to help in another way, please
contact our office, or call 512-327-3345.

A "Blast From The
Past" |
|
The following
segment is by Barbara Culver Clack of Midland, Texas. The quote is
featured in Grassroots Women: A Memoir of the Texas Republican
Party by Meg McKain Grier (www.politicalgrassroots.org)
Question:
What did you learn about campaigning for statewide office?
Answer:
If you haven’t got the stomach for it, you shouldn’t get into
politics. This is what I tell people all the time. If you can’t
stand the thought of losing, don’t do it because you’ve got a 50
percent chance of losing. If you can’t take that, then don’t do it.
You see a lot of these people just crushed and humiliated for life
because they lost. You’ve just got to grow up. You have to be
prepared to take a win or a loss. You don’t know what is going to
affect the voters. You don’t know what makes them stay home or go to
the polls.
