Secretary of State
Roger Williams-Leadership In Action: Our Analysis |

”One thing the Marines Corps
teaches is that it’s better to be doing something than doing
nothing. If you stay where you are, you’re in the position where
your enemy wants you to be. If you start doing something, you are
changing the rules of the game.” - General Peter Pace, Vice Chairman
of the Joints Chiefs of Staff
This man was put on this earth
to make a difference. Not a small one. We’re talking about moving
mountains. Secretary of State Roger Williams reminds us that
greatness is achievable and is it very possible for all of us. Prior
to his non-partisan state position, Mr. Williams raised $20 millions
dollars for the Bush-Cheney 2004 campaign. Not bad.
We asked Mr. Williams, when he
visited Bexar County recently, how he was able to accomplish that
amazing feat. His answer was simple- “I asked in person.” Imagine
that. In his new position, Secretary Williams has attended an
impressive number of business meetings, school speaking engagements
and grassroots functions throughout the state of Texas. Does the man
believe in staying in touch with citizens? Yes. (Most of you know
that we are zealots about this issue: staying in touch with voters.)
The Secretary was a “star
baseball player for Texas Christian University and went on to play
professional ball with the Atlanta Braves' organization” according
to his bio. In recent years, Mr. Williams did an amazing job growing
his family car business in North Texas. It seems that everything he
touches turns to gold.
Why are we mentioning all of
these things? We believe that the time has come when voters want
leaders they can really believe in. They want their leaders to
produce, show results and stay close to citizens at the grassroots
levels. Voters want to look at their leaders and say, “This person
believes in me and my greatness as a Texan.”
As mentioned, Secretary Williams
was in San Antonio recently for a “Get out the Voter” rally
alongside Bexar County commissioners and our local county
judge. Several days after the event, we received a hand-written note
that reads, “Thanks for your Friendship. Onward and Upward!! Best,
Roger Williams.”
That is the essence of servant
leadership: Motivating others. Encouraging young people. Getting out
there at the grassroots level and reminding others of their
potential. Passion for Service. Persistence and drive for all to see
and experience.
This man will continue to do great
things in Texas. Indeed, “Onward and Upward!!”

Texas Supreme Court
Justice Phil Johnson: What We Think Of The Justice |
Alamo Republican Women and South
Texas Republicans hosted a “Meet the Judges” meeting honoring
Justice Phil Johnson several months ago at a local Retirement
community. Justice Johnson is one of those individuals who you meet
and you automatically sense, “This is a good man. Here is a public
servant who is really into serving his country and its
citizens. This is a man who loves Texas, his family, and the
conservative values we share.” It is a sensation that puts you at
peace. You think, “Whew, we are in good hands with this judge.”

According to his bio, “Justice
Phil Johnson’s father’s career as an Air Force officer first brought
the family to West Texas. After graduating from Texas Tech, Johnson
entered active military service with the U.S. Air Force. He trained
as a pilot and served in Vietnam flying fighter aircraft. His
military decorations include the Silver Star, Distinguished Flying
Cross, and Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry.”
America has become great because
patriots like Justice Johnson continue to serve their country in an
unselfish manner. They step up and defend our nation when they are
called upon. These leaders remind us that freedom is not free.
Indeed, service to our nation is a noble calling and it is sacred.
We hope you have an opportunity to meet and support Justice Johnson
as he continues to campaign with his lovely wife, Carla. Tell him
that we send our best from South Texas where he’s always welcome.

First Person Report
From South Texas Republicans |
“Hurricane Ravaged Louisiana:
Through The Eyes of One Volunteer”
By Schuylar W.
Crist, Public Affairs, American Red Cross, Baton Rouge
I spent 14 days in the great
state of Louisiana as an unpaid volunteer for the American Red
Cross. The people were wonderful and incredibly warm despite the
incredible impact Hurricanes Katrina and Rita have had. On two
dinner occasions, we were met with sincere gratitude and
appreciation from the staff. We were met with the same warmth when
visiting the Upper 9th Ward of New Orleans on Thanksgiving Day to
hand out meals to the few residents who were there and the workers
trying to rebuild the area’s infrastructure. On this day, the
Kitchen at the Kenner First Baptist Church gave out its ONE
MILLIONTH meal! By December 2, more than 12 million meals had
been served across Louisiana

(L to R): Wendy Bush, my public affairs boss; Myself;
Relief Job Director Christine Benero

Citizens and contract workers wait in
line for Thanksgiving meals provided by the American Red Cross in
the 9th Ward. This mobile feeding unit was at the corner Elysian
Fields and Gentilly For those of you familiar with the area.
I saw the catastrophic
devastation left behind after Katrina and Rita set their sights on
Louisiana. Words, nor pictures, can begin to fully describe what was
left in the wake of these storms. In New Orleans’ Lower 9th Ward,
Katrina’s deadly waters raised 25-35 feet high waves, rushing in at
more than 200 miles per hour! This was enough to melt away
the levee near the Inner Harbor Navigation Canal, and send a 200-ton
barge barreling through it. The barge eventually ended up crushing a
home and a small school bus. My colleagues and I saw the two ladies
who lived in that home and could only imagine their heartbreak.
The air was dusty and moldy and
the mud was toxic, so it was strongly recommended we not exit our
car. (The National Guardsman with an M-16 was all the prompting we
needed!) Three months after Hurricane Katrina, much of southeast
Louisiana is still off limits to anyone other than the Environmental
Protection Agency, Federal Emergency Management Agency and the
National Guard. The Lower 9th Ward was desolate until the city
of New Orleans opened the area on December 1 for 4 days for a ‘look
and leave’ program, allowing residents to come back and view their
homes or what is left of them, salvage a few things and then leave
again.

%20007.jpg)
Homes were ripped from their
foundations and sitting in the middle of the road. Some were
literally torn in half, so you could see the damage throughout. I
saw two houses, from different places along the street, collapsed
against each other. Houses were marked with either an orange or red
‘X’ indicating which hurricane was responsible in order to show that
rescue teams had searched them. In one portion of the ‘X’, the teams
would write the date, while in another, teams would write their call
sign. They would also show the number of people found in the home or
business, whether living or dead. It took every fiber of my being
to keep my emotions in check as I saw homes and businesses utterly
destroyed. It wasn’t about the buildings. It was about the lives
that were turned upside down, and the tremendous number of lives
lost in this tragedy. I could see children’s toys hanging from
fences and trees, empty car seats in abandoned vehicles. I thought
about the children and prayed that they had been rescued against all
odds.
In retrospect, I can honestly
say that none of us who were there will ever be the same again. The
Southeast Louisiana chapter took up residence in the same empty
T-mobile building we used as a secondary office site. One Red Cross
member, Kevin Lentz, lost his home and both of his restaurants, yet
he still took the time to help his fellow neighbors and put his own
difficulties aside. My own boss’ parents lost their family home as
well.
Through this tragedy, people of
all walks of life have come together to repair what could be
repaired. All of us can do our part. I did mine, and look forward to
the next opportunity. It does not matter what our past experiences
are, or our degree of academic achievement, or even our
disabilities. As a person with a disability, I know many would ask
what I could do. I run the welfare information call center for my
Red Cross chapter locally. In Louisiana, my role was organizational
support for the public affairs function. I also helped edit press
releases and an internal newsletter.

A Message From Marlyn
Feliciano-Rivera, Director of SD 26 For The Texas Federation Of
Republican Women and 1st Vice-President of Hispanic Republican
Women-P.A.C. of San Antonio |

Alamo City Republican Women-P.A.C.
President Freida Wright and TFRW District 26 Director Marlyn
Feliciano-River take a moment from the Texas Federation of
Republican Women Convention held in Corpus Christi to pose for a
photo.
”Hispanic Republican Women
of Bexar County received the Award for Most Improved Newsletter for
clubs of 20-30 members. During the caucus celebration, I was elected
District Director for Senate District 26. I am elated to be able to
serve the community in this aspect and to work alongside with Joe
[Solis] to learn how to empower people to help themselves. I also
want to unite their efforts for the Republican Party values to
become prevalent in our midst.”
Commentary by South Texas
Republicans: Marlyn Rivera told us at our Westside Republican
meeting that she got involved in the party when she was having some
difficulties in her life. Her involvement has given her an
opportunity to meet new friends, learn about government and grow as
a leader. You can see it when you see Marlyn in action. She
irradiates confidence, enthusiasm and excitement at party
functions. Your challenge: Go out and recruit the future Marlyns
who can help us grow our party in 2006.

'The American Way' By
Peggy Noonan |
What does it mean that your first
act on entering a country is breaking its laws?
Thursday, December 8, 2005, 12:01 a.m.-This piece was featured
in the Wall Street Journal. We are including segments of the essay.
“As Congress considers the Bush
administration's guest-worker plan, as Republicans try to figure out
what their immigration philosophy is, and as political observers
parse the implications of yesterday's California House race, here
are some small and human questions on immigration to the United
States.”
“What does it mean that your
first act on entering a country--your first act on that soil--is the
breaking of that country's laws? What does it suggest to you when
that country does nothing about your lawbreaking because it cannot,
or chooses not to? What does that tell you? Will that make you a
better future citizen, or worse? More respecting of the rule of law
in your new home, or less?”
“If you assume or come to
believe that that nation will not enforce its own laws for reasons
that are essentially cynical, that have to do with the needs of big
business or the needs of politicians, will that assumption or belief
make you more or less likely to be moved by that country, proud of
that country, eager to ally yourself with it emotionally,
psychologically and spiritually?”
“This is what I fear about our
elites in government and media, who will decide our immigration
policy. It is that they will ignore the human questions and focus
instead, as they have in the past, only on economic questions (we
need the workers) and political ones (we need the Latino vote). They
think that's the big picture. It's not. What goes on in the human
heart is the big picture.”
“Again: What does it mean when
your first act is to break the laws of your new country? What does
it mean when you know you are implicitly supported in lawbreaking by
that nation's ruling elite? What does it mean when you know your new
country doesn't even enforce its own laws? What does it mean when
you don't even have to become an American once you join America?”
Commentary by South Texas
Republicans: Peggy
Noonan of the Wall Street Journal is right on the money. We made the
same argument about the guest worker program in our speech, “The
Future of the Republican Party.” How can we give free passes to
people who violated the sovereignty of our nation? They broke the
law. A lawbreaker is called an illegal alien for a reason. That is
our point. We are only encouraging more lawlessness when we give
free worker passes to individuals who have broken our laws.
It is amazing and incredibly
patronizing that the leaders in our party who are pushing a guest
worker program refuse to approach their own political base with this
program concept. Why? They know it is dead in the water with rank
and file Republicans.
Here is the reality that Peggy
Noonan points out: The Elites who are pushing the guest worker
program think they are smarter than we are. They have law degrees;
we went to San Antonio College. They go to parties in Georgetown; we
love NASCAR and the Cici’s Pizza buffet for $3.99 per adult. They
simply forgot about us after they drank that D.C. water. That’s
okay. Fortunately, we have people like Congressman Lamar Smith in
South Texas.
I think of Congressman Smith
when moments of discouragement about our party leaders strike. These
moments remind me that there are leaders who don’t care what the
polls say. Leaders like Congressman Smith will say, “I have heard
what you have to say, but this is what I believe is the right thing
for our country. Our American values mean something. Thank you for
telling me about the importance of the Latino vote. We are a nation
of laws.” It should come as no surprise that Congressman Smith is
bucking the trend and speaking out for a reason: Secure our
borders. Enforce our immigration laws. Crack down on abuse. Any
questions?
Okay, that was better than a
treadmill workout. Enough said. What do you think?

A Message From Russ
Hargraves, Chairman Emeritus for the College Republicans of the
University of Texas At San Antonio |
I just ended my term
as Chairman on November 30. Christian Porter, our former Vice
Chairman, is now leading our organization. He will surely do a great
job continuing UTSACR's tradition of commitment to electing
Republican candidates all over Texas. I also wanted to let you know
that our chapter here at San Antonio's largest public school is
alive and well, with just over 120 students.
We had a fantastic Fall semester, hosting our
good friend Senator Jeff Wentworth, and organizing several community
service projects including: A volleyball tournament and raffle
benefiting the American Red Cross in support of Katrina and Rita
victims, a support the troops drive on campus, and several volunteer
missions to shelters for hurricane evacuees here in San Antonio.
And I am proud to announce that once again,
our organization is in the running to receive the University
Life Award for Most Active Political Organization once again (we
made the front page of the University paper three times this
semester). We had fun with our community service projects and were
happy to do them, but we're all getting really eager to kick off
some good campaigns. If anyone out there needs some good, dedicated
Republicans to volunteer for you, UTSA College Republicans is a good
place to look.
We block walk with the best of 'em, we
phone bank, and our members are also well versed in web design and
voter data analysis. Please have campaigns in need of volunteers
contact our organization via our website at
www.utsacr.com.
Keep up the great work, Joe. And good luck to all of you Republican
candidates out there!
Best,
Russ Hargraves

2nd Response To The
Fictitious Letter to Senator John Cornyn By Joe Solis (This One Is
Really Good So Check It Out!) |
12/7/2005
Dear Joe,
I would like to commend you for
the fictional letter you wrote to Senator Cornyn in your newsletter
two weeks ago. I must admit I had no idea that Senator Cornyn had
largely ignored his conservative base while he has been in San
Antonio. I have to say that I also am disappointed. Now, I would
have been willing to give him the benefit of the doubt had I not had
an equally disappointing experience. What this tells me is that you
are not off base.
Recently, I had a discussion
with Sen. Cornyn’s office with regard to his vote for the portion of
the Budget Reconciliation Act that would add 360,000+ H-1B visas for
foreign workers. These visas would be issued to foreign workers for
American engineering and technical jobs. His staff informed me that
it was necessary because there aren’t enough American workers to
fill these positions.
You know that as a part of my
job, I have the opportunity to talk to many, many people across the
state. In this capacity, I have been told by countless individuals
that their spouses, children, friends, etc. have been either
unemployed or underemployed for the last 4-5 years but have
engineering degrees. Why is there such a disconnect here? Is this
act a blatant attempt to ship our jobs overseas? If there is a lack
of high tech workers, is this an appropriate response to this
problem? Should we not perhaps be making attempts to get American
workers into these jobs first or be certain that our schools are
preparing students so that they can go into those fields? Why are we
not looking at legislation to rein in corporations looking to reduce
their bottom line by hiring foreign workers without regard to
America’s future? Needless to say, I was completely dumbfounded by
Sen. Cornyn’s position. If you are interested in this issue, I urge
you to read Phyllis Schlafly’s article. Be warned! It will make you
cringe. Phyllis
Schlafly Article
I know that some might feel it
is not appropriate to speak to elected officials in this manner.
While I respect that opinion, I must respectfully disagree. I think
that any embarrassment should be on the part of our “conservative”
leaders at every level of government who ignore their base,
disregard conservative principles and instead ratchet up the
spending, give away Americans jobs, and ignore the securing our
borders. I am of the belief that we, as the very individuals who
worked to get them elected, should be holding their feet to the
fire. Are they not in office because we worked hard to get them
there!!! Many of us have done backbreaking work by block walking,
volunteering at phone banks, and even hosting events in our own
homes. We have earned the right and we owe it to our children and
grandchildren not to back down. We have nothing to lose but our
freedom!!
Please keep up your good work!!
I am in your debt.

"A Blast From The
Past" |
The following
segment is by Nita Gibson of Lubbock, Texas. The quote is featured
in Grassroots Women: A Memoir of the Texas Republican Party
by Meg McKain Grier (www.politicalgrassroots.org)
“There are a lot of people in politics that
just do what they want to do. That’s not the way you are successful
in politics. I agree wholeheartedly that you should be a part of the
planning. But once a plan is in motion, I believe in going right
down the line and keeping it and implementing it, not reinventing it
along the way. There are a lot people in politics that get to be
like little Napoleons in their own county.”

Texas Toll Party:
You Asked For It, You Got It |
|

Joe has heard from toll
advocates asking toll opponents' what their alternatives to tolls
are. I find it interesting that highway interests and our government
with the financial resources and even the obligation to solve
traffic congestion and properly plan our highway infrastructure
expect a group of unfunded grassroots citizens to provide them with
the solutions they themselves are charged with providing the public.
In spite of our limited resources, we have put forth solutions from
the beginning. All it takes is a little research and elbow grease
and the common sense solutions emerge. We'll show a few examples
from the some of the insiders themselves, the San Antonio Mobility
Coalition (SAMCo) as stated in an article in the Express-News
December 4 (Express
News Article).
EVERY alternative to tolls SAMCo
lists is LESS money than tolls!
There are four alternatives listed:
Create a countywide gas tax
of 25.7 cents per gallon
Increase the city sales tax by
3/4 of a cent.
Boost city property taxes 56
percent.
Raise the county's vehicle
registration fee from $10 to $110.
The hike in vehicle registration
they mention is $100 a year compared to an average of $3,000 a year
in tolls (this figure comes from TxDOT's own online survey that
quoted 39 cents a mile for a 20 mile commute on 1604 which equals
over $3,000 a year just to drive to and from work). The 25 cent per
gallon increase SAMCo and others says would be necessary is also
less than tolls. Considering the average San Antonian uses roughly
1500 gallons of gas a year, they currently pay $300 a year in gas
tax. Even a 25 cent gas tax hike would be less than tolls at $375 a
year more, which is more than double what we give the state now. The
size of this tax increase is also totally unsubstantiated in my
mind--DOUBLE!--what do they need double the money for? Even an
increase in property tax that they mention would be less than the
$3,000 a year in tolls for most taxpayers.
Some common
sense solutions…
Get our fair share of gas tax
revenues back in San Antonio
Put the new ATD sales tax
increase to work to matching funds as promised
Pass through financing
Bond funds
Cut the documented bureaucratic
waste inside TxDOT and the tolling authorities (RMAs)
Demand proper planning from
local and state government so we build freeways with interchanges
and have sensible intersections which cause more of our congestion
woes than anything else.
We give away $100 million more
in gas tax revenues every year that we do not receive back. If we're
$100 million short, why don’t we get the tax money WE ALREADY PAY
back into San Antonio? A controversial sales tax (ATD tax) was
passed in November 2004 in order to give San Antonio the ability to
have a matching funds capability similar to what tolls would do and
yet before the voting booths were put away our politicians salivated
at the next opportunity to increase our transportation taxes through
a lifetime of unbridled toll taxes, too!
If they get rid of just the toll
equipment not to mention the toll lanes (that only half of all
motorists can use) and just build what's needed, the road is 40-100%
less money to build and EVERYONE can drive on it. So the simple
solution sure seems to be to CAN the toll lanes and vastly reduce
this fictional $8.4 billion funding gap which is also
unsubstantiated. SA gets $100 million a year in discretionary funds
currently, they're saying we need FOUR times the money we currently
get (their $8.4 billion figure works out to $420 million a year over
20 years). The entire state of Texas gets $6.1 billion a year for
transportation and they say SA needs $8.4 billion over the next 20
years? SA is number 5 in number of lane-miles per person in the U.S...how
much money and how many roads do they think we need? TxDOT's claims
that they'd have to raise the gas tax $1 is completely
UNSUBSTANTIATED and would amount to more than quadrupling their
current state gas tax revenue intake.
"You have to understand that, in
the highway world, 'needs' are what most of us would call wish
lists," said Bill Barker, a San Antonio-based transportation
consultant.
TxDOT and Alamo RMA Chair Bill
Thornton try to say we're advocating spreading the burden for
highway funding to every taxpayer instead of taxing just those who
pay the tolls. First of all, I, along with Commissioner Lyle Larson,
do not believe ANY tax increase is truly necessary because TxDOT and
our Legislature demonstrated they are not properly managing
transportation funds (raid gas tax for public education and DPS,
etc.) they already have nor have our State representatives seen to
it that the gas tax money we already pay gets back in San Antonio
(2nd largest city in Texas yet we only get $100 million in highway
funds out of TxDOT's $6.1 billion annual budget).
In addition, that argument went
out the window in that article published in the
Express-News On December 1st that clearly shows improvements to
US 281 are 100% funded with GAS TAXES which we ALL paid (which we
can't even drive on without paying a lifetime of toll tax). If they
want to play that game let's look at all the taxes we pay but don't
necessarily ever use like public medicine, disability, food stamps,
public education, public housing, abortion, NEA funding, bridges to
no where in Alaska, the list could go on and on.
They're being disingenuous to
push a sales tax EVERYONE pays in November 2004 (many in San Antonio
do not or cannot afford to drive) and then come out and make the
argument less than a year later that only those who use the road
should pay for the road (meanwhile we all continue to pay gas taxes,
even if you don't drive a car you pay through indirect cost of
goods, etc.).
Don't forget, these are the same
folks who drank the Kool-Aid at the Transportation Leadership Forum
hosted by SAMCo September 7-8 whose keynote speaker, David Laney
(ex-Transportation Commissioner), thinks we need to tie the gas tax
to inflation IN ADDITION to unbridled toll tax and ATD tax. When
dealing with politicians and bureaucracies, ENOUGH WILL NEVER BE
ENOUGH! It's time to stand up and demand an independent audit of
TxDOT, to challenge their rationale behind these projects, and to
demand transparency and accountability in this process.
TxDOT would have us believe they
have the money to build US 281 as a toll road (that's nearly twice
the cost), but they don't have the money to build it as a free road?
Note how the December 1 article states foreign companies are vying
for these "most lucrative toll lanes" in the plans! I'll say
lucrative, that's because the private firms aren't paying a DIME of
the cost to build and then they get to charge us tolls for the next
50 years!
The reality:
Toll roads cost more to build &
maintain (just for 3 miles on 281 it went from $48 million to $83
million, 6 lanes of it are unnecessary, they're just to skirt around
law against tolling existing roads).
Only about half of all motorists
can afford to drive on them while 100% of taxpayers are footing the
bill to build it.
We're being charged THREE times
to drive on the same stretch of pavement (taxed to build existing
freeway, taxed to pay for the improvements, then lifetime toll tax
to drive on it).
They want to charge us THREE
taxes to drive on our highways elsewhere throughout town and around
the state since the Dec. 18, 2003 Minute Order was passed by the
Transportation Commission mandating ALL new lanes and highways be
tolled (gas tax, ATD sales tax, and tolls).
The toll money is going to a
foreign corporation for the next 50 years (using contracts that are
secret, violate open government, which grants them monopolies free
of competition, failing to properly apply free market principles).
Our elected
officials are DICTATING this to us without a vote of the PEOPLE!
TxDOT's figures and, more
importantly, their rationale for this toll first mandate MUST BE
CHALLENGED. What's the rationale behind these projects and why
aren't the costs of these GIGANTIC toll ways being challenged? We
found, in one of TxDOT's own toll feasibility studies, the cost of
toll gantry equipment at $1 million per MILE! We found projects
where the cost of toll equipment equaled the cost to build the road.
One of their studies showed 1604 improvements could be paid for 100%
with bonds, and yet you're tolling it.
We're currently taxed
approximately 3 1/2 cents a mile (on average according to graphic
that accompanied Dec. 1 story) under the gas tax system. The
national average for a traditional turnpike is 9 cents a mile, what
on earth do they need with 14-39 cents a mile (I have the
feasibility studies that show rates of $1 to use the new toll-only
interchanges)? With 5 cost estimate changes on the toll starter
system since June and the bait and switch change in toll rates found
in the Austin plans, the public doesn't trust the toll rates they're
quoting for 281 and the toll starter system.
TxDOT known for waste,
mismanagement
How is not PURE waste to
bulldoze an existing highway (US 281) just to re-pave it so they can
call it "new" and get away with tolling it (even when the project is
100% paid with gas tax)? There are also questions about the
legitimacy of TxDOT's expenditures. Twenty states have lower gas tax
than we do. Texas is second only to California in terms of
disbursements. Caltrans spent $9.3 billion while TxDOT spent $6.8
billion. CA has a greater population than Texas, so it works out to
be that Caltrans spent $259 per person to TxDOT's $306 per person.
Caltrans spent 24% of it budget on local roads and TxDOT only spent
6.5% on local roads. TxDOT spends $88 more a person than Caltrans
spent on its road system, and remember CA is more populous!
They're asking us to pay $27.6
million PER MILE for a 3 mile stretch of improvements on US 281! I'm
hard-pressed to find ANY highway project that expensive throughout
the country and yet NONE OF OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS are challenging
these costs! They want to privatize; so let's really look at how
private companies operate. Every expense MUST BE JUSTIFIED and the
rationale defended. It's tough to defend the rationale of tolling
existing highways we've already paid for (clearly double taxation),
and toll roads in general since in order to work they require
permanent congestion on the surrounding lanes and require building
lanes that sit idle outside of rush hour. Toll roads don't solve
congestion they profit from it. Toll roads profit off of our misery
and are notorious for being a tax that never goes away.
Look-up a report done by the
Texas Public Policy Foundation in 1997 called, Sundown on Big
Government. It was the last external audit of TxDOT. It shows that
TxDOT is fraught with millions of dollars in waste and
mismanagement, including stockpiling asphalt, gas, and other
supplies. Some reforms have been made, but until TxDOT has an
independent audit and these bureaucracies get their own houses in
order in a way the public can trust (following our laws of
transparent, open government), we should not be asked to pay a
lifetimes of tolls for roads we've already paid for WITHOUT A PUBLIC
VOTE!
This fight is
about politicians IGNORING the will of the PEOPLE!
It seems the real story here is
about our politicians IGNORING the will of the people and failing to
represent us. It's citizens having to battle their own elected
representatives who WORK FOR US. We are ordinary citizens trying to
take our government back from these highway interests who have
muddied the waters of the public process.
We have brought up more than enough
concerns, detailed concerns backed-up by facts ALL FOUND IN PUBLIC
DOCUMENTS, to warrant at the very least an independent review of the
toll plans. If this is truly the ONLY way to fund our roads, then it
should hold up to public scrutiny and the truth will bare that out.
The people are asking for a say, for a vote, on such a fundamental
shift in our taxation to the tune of $3,000 or MORE per year, PER
COMMUTER. Get involved or this canker will spread:

We Need 5,000 New
E-Mail Addresses In 2006 Help Our 'Solidarity Movement' In South
Texas |
Friends, we are going to
need your help in 2006. We are undertaking our most important e-mail
collection campaign in our 3-year history. With your support, we can
acquire 5,000 new e-mails addresses for our organization. This is
how you can help us.Send
us potential leads by e-mail and we will write these individuals and
ask them if they would like to receive our free newsletter. It is
that easy. Send us 1, 3, 20 or 100 names and e-mail addresses. We
will contact all of them and encourage them to join our movement.
You can also encourage your friends to sign up be going to
SouthTexasRepublicans.com.
Let’s be realistic about the
media in South Texas. They are very hostile to conservatives,
Republicans, evangelical Christians, and anybody else who espouses
the values of the right. They do not cover us and they treat us
(conservatives) like we are third-rate citizens. We must develop,
cultivate and grow our own method of communicating and staying in
touch.
During the Cold War, the Polish
Solidarity Movement flourished using fax machines, grassroots
involvement and flyers. We are in the same type of war, and we must
count on ourselves through e-mail, web pages and blogs. Lech Walesa
brought down the communists in Poland because he was aided by the
Vatican and President Ronald Reagan. The Republican Party of Texas,
political action committees and generous grassroots supporters are
our allies in this important fight.
It is your fight and our
country that is at stake.
Just think what we can
accomplish if we have 10,000 to 15,000 e-mail addresses.
