The Inaugural Winner Of The "John Tower Award" Is Carole M. "Teddy" Peterson Of Bexar County

We are pleased to announce that the inaugural winner of the “John Tower Leadership Award” is Carol M. “Teddy” Peterson of Bexar County.  Mrs. Peterson was selected because she is a tremendous patriot, a great Texan and one of the founding “mothers” of the Republican Party of Texas. The resume of Teddy Peterson is posted below. You are going to be so impressed when you read that she has been a consistent grassroots Republican for for almost 50 years.

Teddy is one of those quiet troopers who work in the trenches with little fanfare or desire to attract attention. That is the beauty of her activism.  It is from her heart. Her service to her country, her state and her party is magnified by the fact that she has consistently stayed involved when she could have been doing other things with her loyal husband, Mr. Tom Peterson. She is a role model for thousands of young Republicans who are getting involved in our party now. Friends, it all started with people like Teddy Peterson.

South Texas Republicans believes that our future growth is directly related to our understanding of our past. The victories of our party in Texas and Washington did not occur by accident. Leaders like Senator John Tower and Governor Bill Clements were the trailblazers in our party.  They led the way in the early 60’s when Democrats ran this state.

Their successes were only possible because Teddy Peterson, and her fellow volunteers, were there for John Tower in 1960. Our statewide party was built from the ground up. Indeed, 45 years ago Teddy Peterson was building the foundation of our party by quietly and passionately working for candidates, officials and the grassroots organizations. Let me repeat, our party successes did not happen miraculously. Mrs. Peterson and her fellow patriots started it all.

Teddy is a legend in our party. South Texas Republicans PAC believes it is time for all of us to thank and recognize this wonderful lady for a lifetime of involvement in our party. All of us are heirs and beneficiaries of this incredible gift that she has passed down to us. She is a role model for those who believe that one person can make a real difference after 50 years of service. Teddy, you are a one-of-a-kind lady and we are honored to know you.

Congratulations!

"A Blast From The Past" From Teddy Peterson

“Congressman Jim Collins was down from Dallas when Tom Loeffler was running for Congress in 1978.  He was making a speech to a Republican Women’s group.  He said, ‘The Republican Women are the best street walkers in the world.’  I don’t think it came out quite like he meant for it to.”   - Teddy Peterson

“Shay Teresa Gebhardt, who presided over Bexar County Court-at-Law No. 3 for 12 years, died at home of cancer early Sunday. She was 58.”

Commentary by South Texas Republicans: Judge Gebhardt was one awesome lady. We loved her passion, her spunkiness and her willingness to serve her community as a judge. She was one judge who really loved to network throughout the county. Shay once told us that she was driven and energized by grassroots outreach. We’ll miss her.

"The Republicrat" (A Moderate Viewpoint)

This is a new series by an anonymous political insider in Bexar County.  The views of this author do not represent the views of South Texas Republicans.

It’s that time again when the candidates are coming out of the woodwork. It is Republicans vs. Republicans, Democrats vs. Democrats, Republican challengers vs. incumbent Democrats and vise versa. Get ready to rumble!

Two Republicans and maybe two Democrats are vying for State District 118 being vacated by Rep. Carlos Uresti who will challenge veteran State Senator Frank Madla in the Democratic Primary.

Uresti vs. Madla will prove to be a blood bath, according to Southside sources. The rumbling has already started and is gaining momentum. Numerous Southside community leaders are livid that Uresti is challenging Madla who is also very popular with Republicans in his district outside Bexar County. The lines are drawn, the feud has begun and not to the benefit of Democrats.

Uresti’s open seat promises to also be a free-for-all brawl and a good shot for Republicans to gain a House seat on the Southside. According to Democratic insiders, it could go either way depending on who the Republican’s choose as their candidate. Democrats believe George Antuna would be tougher to beat because he is perceived as being a less hard-core conservative, better known on the Southside and generally liked by many Democrats.

Democrat Larry Rickets who ran unsuccessfully against Sheriff Ralph Lopez last time in the primary has expressed a keen interest in the seat. Word is that he wouldn’t fare any better if he were to get the primary nod for the Uresti seat.

The other declared Democratic candidate for the 118th is Joe Farias, who recently resigned as a Harlandale School Board Trustee. He too ran an unsuccessful bid for City Council, District 3 last election cycle.

Farias is not expected by many to do well either. (as of the Thursday night newsletter deadline, neither Farias or Ricketts has filed)

This time around, however, Republicans better be prepared to encounter numerous Democratic candidates who will openly share their religious or moral beliefs to the voters. Republican candidates will no longer be able to stake a claim to the exclusive market on Christian principles.

That’s the moderate viewpoint, I am the Republicrat.

(Next week’s update: Rodriguez vs. Cuellar & a few other hotly contested races)

A Message From Terri Hall Of The Texas Toll Party

Since state, city, and county politicians, the MPO, the RMA, and TxDOT have REFUSED to listen to the public outcry on these double tax toll projects, the citizens will have their voices heard in a court of law. On December 21, 2005, concerned residents of Bexar County through two citizen groups, People for Efficient Transportation (legal arm of Texas Toll Party) and AGUA (Aquifer Guardians), filed an injunction to halt the construction of a toll road on US 281.

TxDOT did NOT comply with the law and study the environmental, economic, and health effects of this toll road and has FAILED to consider reasonable alternatives as the law requires. In fact, one such reasonable alternative to this MASSIVE 16 lane toll corridor is TxDOT's own original plan (promoted in public hearings since the late 1990s) that's less expensive, less invasive, and inflicts less harm to residents, businesses, and San Antonio's sole source of water.

Read about it here on the blog of our new local San Antonio Toll

Party web site: http://satollparty.com/post/?p=49.

This week also brought a scathing Op-Ed piece in the Express-News from well-respected former San Antonio City Planner, Dave Pasley. He  gives credibility to many of the Toll Party's observations and concerns laying much of the blame squarely on the shoulders of the City and County's failed leadership: http://satollparty.com/post/?p=48. Be sure to sign our online petition, to join our Business

Coalition, and to help us win the legal fight with a donation: http://satollparty.com.
