Welcome Message From
South Texas Republicans |
Thanks to all of
you who are forwarding our newsletters to your friends, family
members and business associates. Please continue to help us spread
our message to new voters. Try this today: Send this newsletter to
small business owners who are not politically
active. Encourage them to get involved. Ask them to sign up at
SouthTexasRepublicans.com.
Note to our readers who are conservative and independent
Democrats: We seek your support for our judges this
November. There are many great candidates and officials on our side
of the aisle. Give them a shot; they want to earn your independent
vote this November. Keep an open mind as you read this newsletter

Diane M. Rivera For
45th District Court Judge (Bexar County) |
South Texas Republicans will be
introducing you to new candidates for office in the next few
months. We will provide biographical information that is usually not
provided in the typical “push card.”
Mrs. Rivera will be challenging
Democrat Judge Barbara Hanson Nellermoe in November. There is no
challenger in the Republican primary. 4 years ago, Barbara
Nellermoe defeated Republican Wade Shelton in a race that should
have been taken by our party. That was one sad night because we also
lost the brilliant Jeff Mulliner to a local Democrat.
Friends, our judges and our
judicial candidates need our help. We cannot depend on direct mail
and fancy billboards to bail out our candidates. It is going to take
a strong grassroots efforts to help push our judges over the top in
this evenly split county. It is up to us. L
Diane Rivera is a candidate who
is new to the political game we are familiar with. As you can see,
she has been busy over the years serving this community. We
encourage you to introduce her to your friends, family members and
business associates. Give her a $20 donation if you can spare
it. Host a little “Meet and Greet” in your home for her.
Running for office is not an
easy process. Our Republican candidates and officials sacrifice so
much to serve us as public servants. Let’s step it up for them. Find
small ways to help. This lady is worthy of your support.
Schuylar Crist
skyskyrider@hotmail.com will forward your e-mails to Diane
Rivera, upon request.

"Government Really
Does Not Solve Problems..." By Ronald Reagan, 40th President Of The
United States |
“For one thing
government’s record is not all that good. In the 1960s, government
declared war on poverty. Poverty won.”
“When government
sets out to solve a problem, the cure may not be worse than the
disease. But it is bigger and it costs more. Government does not
really solve problems; it subsidizes them. And it does not produce a
dime of revenue. It can only spend only what it first takes from the
pockets of the working men and women of this country.”

A Word About Tracy
Wolff Of The Hidalgo Foundation Of Bexar County |
[Warning:
Friends, we are not going soft on Democrats based on this
commentary. We are still proud members of the “vast right wing
conspiracy” so beloved by Senator Hillary Clinton. Tracy Wolff is
married to Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff, a longtime Democrat.]
Last week, we had an opportunity to visit “The
Children’s Court” at the Bexar Courthouse. Tracy Wolff is
the President of the Hidalgo Foundation of Bexar County. This
organization, under her leadership, has done an incredible job with
this floor of the historic courthouse. The highlights of this court
include: “Supervised and child-friendly educational waiting room
where children can socialize, get homework help, create craft
projects, read, have snacks” and “Two technologically advanced
courtrooms/hearing rooms.” A bipartisan group of judges was also
instrumental in this major project.
South Texas is
really blessed to have the leadership of this intelligent and classy
lady. What she has done to help facilitate the birth and development
of the “Children’s Court” is simply outstanding. We commend her and
all of her accomplishments.

"The Republicrat" (A
Moderate Viewpoint) |
This is a new series by an
anonymous political insider in Bexar County. The views of this
author do not represent the views of South Texas Republicans.
IMPORTANT NOTICE:
A prominent Bexar County Democrat asked us if we were “bugging” them
for this internal information. Now that would be really
exciting!!! We just have a great source who is writing for us.
Enjoy!!
Now that it has been
settled that Justice of the Peace Albert McKnight is still on the
ballot, the race is escalating once again. The momentum is slowly
building in favor of Judge Linda Penn who substituted for McKnight
on the bench during his legal battles. It is way too early to
determine if McKnight’s legal woes will be his undoing or not.
McKnight’s deletion off the ballot and subsequent reinstatement may
actually work to his benefit.
Penn’s use of a Republican as a campaign manager is sending up red
flags with Democrats. Apparently the Republicans are taking a page
out of the Democrats’ playbook.
There seems to be some blurring
and unusual coziness between parties lately. Not only has Penn
recruited a Republican for her race, apparently the Republican
candidate for the 118th State Rep. Race, George Antuna, has done
likewise with the possible addition of Christian Archer, special
assistant to the Democratic Mayor Phil Hardberger.
It was not that long ago that former Bexar County Democratic Chair
Gabe Quintanilla openly endorsed Republican Susan Reed for District
Attorney. Then there is former Republican Party Chair Roy Barrera
supporting Democrat Dan Pozza for the 4th Court of Appeals.
Apparently we can get along!
Although the local AFL-CIO Labor Council recently refused to endorse
County Commissioner, Precinct 2, Paul Elizondo during their public
forum because the Bexar County Sheriff’s Deputies blocked it, the
Service Employees Union (SEIU) did endorse him at their candidates
forum.
SEIU represents City and County employees who are no longer
affiliated with the Labor Council, and are now realigned with the
Teamsters and Food Handlers.
As time goes on and gets closer to the joint primary, it is obvious
that Republicans will be closely watching to see if any Democrats go
postal on each other. It could still happen as temperatures rise.
Democrats are hoping that will happen in the Republican primary, but
that appears to be wishful thinking at best for the Democrats. Those
races that are hotly contested on the Southside most likely will be
the ones where a candidate goes postal after suffering major
personal attacks on his character
The contest for the 118th State Rep. race is the race to watch.
Firefighter John Lujan, running as a Republican, is unofficially
supported by much of labor. While labor does not ordinarily endorse
Republicans, it does on rare occasion.
Word is that if Lujan makes the Republican run off, he will secure
the labor endorsement over any one of the four Democrats who all
failed in their bid to get labor’s support. If Lujan succeeds in
winning that endorsement, he might be the first Republican to win
that seat.
This past week even Express-News columnist Ken Rodriguez
wrote about the possibility of a Republican taking the seat in the
118th. If you have been reading this column for the past five weeks
you may recall Rodriguez’s analysis of the race mirrors much of what
I have shared with you.
Weeks ago I stated that Farias was well known but not well liked,
but the strongest candidate for the Democrats. I also said that
Salyer and Ricketts would be the first to go in a run-off because
they were Anglo. Rodriguez believes that Republicans won’t choose a
Hispanic in that race. As a long-time Southsider, I disagree. I
still think Antuna is the odds on favorite to win the Republican nod
and will face Farias in November. Only time will tell.
That’s the moderate viewpoint. I am the Republicrat.
