Commissioner Michael L. Williams
For Governor- A Prediction By Joe Solis/South Texas Republicans |
|

You heard it here
first. We predict Railroad Commissioner Michael L. Williams
will be the Governor of Texas within the next 15 years. Why?
Let me explain. Commissioner Williams, who just turned 40, has been
weaving a loyal and impressive grassroots network in Texas over the
past few years. He is surrounded by some sharp people, including
Corbin Casteel, his campaign director. The Commissioner is a smart
man who understands the value of patience and diligence.
Mr. Williams is part of a new
generation of Republicans leaders in Texas who are enthusiastic,
intelligent, grassroots driven, results oriented, and ambitious. Two
other leaders are part of this new breed: Secretary of State Roger
Williams and Land Commissioner Susan Combs. These folks have that
special something. You just feel it when you are around them.
They have a passion for serving that is authentic and majestic. It
is in their blood and you just know it.
Commissioner Williams would
make history because he would be the first black governor of
Texas. He could bring a whole new segment of voters to the
conservative movement. David Barton of Wall Builders has been doing
amazing work educating religious leaders and grassroots activists
about the fact that the founders of the Republican Party of Texas
were proud black Texans. One could say that the election of Mr.
Williams would be a strong statement to the entire nation: We are
the party that values strong leadership and we do not need a quota
system to prove it.
Mr. Williams is a man who
earned his leadership positions through hard work, a devotion to
serving the public, and a disposition that is a bright as the
sun. There is talk in Austin about Governor Perry being chosen as a
Vice-Presidential candidate in 2008 and Lt. Governor David Dewhurst
running for the U.S. Senate at some point. These eventual movements
will open these leadership positions. I also believe it is important
that they move on in 4 years because others deserve an opportunity
to lead in 2008 and beyond.
These new leaders,
Commissioner Michael L. Williams, Secretary of State Roger Williams
and Commissioner Susan Combs deserve our ongoing support.

A Message From Friends
Of 4th Court of Appeals Justice Phylis Speedlin |

Dear Friends,
On Thursday, June
29, we invite you to join us at Magnolia Gardens on Main as we host
a fundraising reception honoring Fourth Court of Appeals Justice
Phylis Speedlin.
Justice Speedlin has
a challenger in the November election and we cannot afford to lose
her on the Fourth Court of Appeals. That is why we are asking you to
join us on the host committee with a commitment of $5000, $2500,
$1000 or $500. It is imperative that Justice Speedlin raises the
necessary funds to fully mount a strong campaign. This race
encompasses a large and diverse 32-county district. To reach each
and every voter in that expansive an area, Justice Speedlin must
communicate her message through mail, radio, and television – a task
that is not inexpensive.
We know and believe
in Justice Speedlin. She is well respected not only throughout the
32 counties served by the Fourth Court of Appeals, but also
statewide. Her depth of experience arising from her career as a
nurse during the Vietnam War, to her 17-year legal practice at one
of San Antonio’s oldest and most respected law firms, to her service
to the community as a district court judge and now as a justice on
the Fourth Court of Appeals, is certainly without question. During
her tenure at the Court of Appeals, she has authored 427 opinions
concerning a wide variety of issues, both civil and criminal, and
not one has been overturned!
In a statewide
election, judicial races often are overlooked by the voters. That is
why raising the necessary resources is so very important to ensure
that Justice Speedlin has the ability to get her message out to the
voters early and often. You and I already know Justice Speedlin’s
reputation as a no-nonsense jurist who strives in each and every
case to be fair, balanced and impartial. Now, we need to join forces
to help her communicate that message throughout this 32-county
district. Can we count on your help and support for Justice Speedlin?
Thank you in advance
for your support of Justice Speedlin’s re-election campaign. If you
have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us or Susan
Lilly at (866) 789-9223 or
susan@lillyandcompany.com.

"A Short Letter To My
Young Daughters" By Joe Solis |
Based on the following article:
Laredo banker fears immigration
backlash
Web Posted: 06/06/2006 12:00 AM CDT,
Meena Thiruvengadam,
San Antonio
Express-News
Business Writer
Article Featuring Quotes From Dennis E. Dixon
To my Precious Daughters,
It is 2006 and the two of you
are 5 and 2. I just read the following business article with quotes
by Dennis Nixon, IBC Chairman and Chief Executive of IBC Bank. This
is the year in which immigration reform has exploded into a major
domestic issue. IBC is an “international financial services
powerhouse with more than $10.3 billion to its name.”
Dennis
Nixon said the following in this article: “Nixon insists racism is
what's really fueling the immigration debate. ‘The white milk of our
society is turning brown, and some people don't like it,’ he said,
explaining that his immigration opponents are ‘driven by a desire to
keep Mexicans and the Hispanic culture out of the country.’ ”
I want
the two of you to look back and see that there were once people who
actually believed that those of us who are passionate about the
sovereignty of our borders, tough border security, and respect for
our current immigration laws are actually racists. They wanted
others to believe that we hate Mexicans and the Hispanic culture.
According to individuals like Mr. Nixon, we are wrong if we want
tough immigration laws.
Yes,
in 2006 there are still small-minded people like Mr. Dennis Nixon
who actually say this in public because they believe it.
I am such a racist that I actually married your mother who was born
in Mexico City. Does all of this make sense? No, it does not.
Neither does Mr. Nixon when he makes these irresponsible comments in
public. (He is a grown man if you can believe it.)
Here is
one final thought to ponder: The level of greed in 2006 is beyond
comprehension in some quarters. In another statement by Mr. Nixon,
he remarked, "Look at me. I'm a company that's gone from a handful
of employees to more than 3,000, but if we don't address
immigration, eventually I'll lose my customers. That'll affect every
single person in this business."
Message:
If we enforce our current laws it might hurt this billion-dollar
company. Now wouldn’t that be a shame? Who would want to hurt their
30% yearly growth rate? Who would want the shareholders of this 10
billion dollar company to be hurt if we actually follow the
immigration laws on the books?
I
want the two of you to know that the patriots who love this country
are serious about border security and the enforcement of our current
laws.
They are not racists.
They are passionate about their United States of America. Many of
their sons and daughters paid the ultimate price for the freedoms
you now enjoy.
We are
nation of laws. Do not be fooled by people like Mr. Nixon who imply
that our patriotism is nothing more than hatred for other races,
including your own.
Be proud and brave.
Know that we are fighting the good fight. Never forget that you will
also face small-minded people who will criticize you for loving your
country.
Speak out when you hear these patronizing and disparaging comments.
That is your American heritage.
Love,
Your Father

Observations Of A
Delegate To The Republican Party of Texas State Convention By
Schuylar Crist |

Candidate For State Representative
District 73 Nathan Macias Poses For A Photo With Schuylar Crist.

Founder and President of WallBuilders
and Former RPT Vice-chairman
David Barton and Schuylar Crist Following The Prayer Breakfast On
June 3rd.

Marialyn Barnard, candidate for 225th
District Court Speaks to the SD 26 Caucus

and opinions expressed in this article are purely my own, and do not

On June 2nd and 3rd, I had the
privilege of serving as a Delegate for Senate District 26 at the
State Convention for the Republican Party held here in San Antonio.
I had the double honor of bringing my mother with me as my guest.
She served in 2004 as a Delegate, while I served as an Alternate. At
the time of the Primary, mom was in the hospital fighting for her
life, preventing her from voting and, therefore, joining me as
either a Delegate or Alternate. For this reason, our being together
at this year’s Convention was even more special. Thanks to God that
she is now well on the road to recovery.
Prior to the Convention itself,
on June 1st, my mother and I attended the Texas Eagle Forum banquet.
Special Guest Phylis Schlaffly, the president and founder of the
National Eagle Forum, gave a wonderfully impassioned and informative
speech about illegal immigration and its true impact on America!
Also in attendance at the banquet was our own Lieutenant Governor
David Dewhurst, State Board of Education Place 5 representative Ken
Mercer, former Vice-Chairman of the Republican Party of Texas David
Barton, and former State Representative Rick Green.
On Friday, I had the honor to
meet Railroad Commissioner Michael Williams, Republican candidate
for State Representative in the 73rd District, Nathan Macias, who
retired Carter Casteel and David Barton. Both Michael and Nathan
personally stated how much they have enjoyed our newsletter and
encouraged me/us to continue working hard to be a leader in growing
the grassroots leadership in Republican politics in San Antonio, and
throughout the State! These compliments were wonderful to hear and
an honor from such distinguished people.
During our SD 26 Caucus, we had
much to consider. How we came to consider some of these things left
much to be desired. We were charged with electing our State
Committeeman and Committeewoman, as well as nominating our Chairman
and Vice-Chairman of the Republican Party of Texas. We also
considered whether or not to push for an amendment to the now
infamous Rule 43.
In the election of our State
Committeeman and Committeewoman, there were ‘fireworks’ of a sort.
The winners were Johnny Lovejoy and Marian Stanko respectively. The
‘fireworks’ began when the Bexar County GOP chairman Richard
Langlois began leveling false accusations against previous SREC 26
members Joe Solis and Shirley Thompson KNOWINGLY. Mr. Langlois
attacked Joe Solis for his early resignation (three weeks before the
end of a 2-ear term for personal reasons) by stating ‘he was
unwilling to fulfill his obligations to his position and the party.’
This was very offensive to me, and I believe those who know Joe and
how hard he works for the Republican Party in this district and the
state would also be offended. Langlois further went on to attack
Shirley Thompson by falsely stating she had only attended one SREC
meeting. She quickly put him in his place and corrected him in a
calm, Christian manner by informing him she attended all but two
meetings, and even sent proxies to those two meetings she was unable
to attend as permitted by Party rules. I am ashamed that our County
Party’s leader would continue personally attacking people. He should
have remembered it did not help him win people over in 2004 when he
called Gina Parker (former Candidate for RPT Chairman) a criminal
and was practically booed out of the room. As a lawyer, he should
know better than to slander and defame people and their character.
The nomination of Chair and
Vice-Chair of the RPT was far more cordial and went pretty smoothly.
Obviously, Tina Benkiser received our caucus’ nomination as she was
the only candidate running, and thank God she is willing to come
back and serve our GREAT state and Party. For Vice-Chair, Dr. Robin
Armstrong, MD, won our caucus nomination, and by a vote of 18-15,
won the Vice-Chairmanship. He received a nominating and seconding
speech in addition to his own time to speak to our caucus. Dr. Bobby
Eberle, founder of GOPUSA.com and Vice-Chair candidate was not able
to attend our caucus due to the delay of his speech in another
caucus. However, the Honorable Ken Mercer gave a wonderful
nomination speech. No time was given for a seconding speech on
behalf of Bobby’s candidacy (which I was to give). I must also say
that before and after the vote, in and out of caucus, it appears the
vote largely hinged not on qualifications or experience, as these
were nearly identical, but on race! I was initially shocked at the
candor of people who stated this very thing. I personally think
HIGHLY of both Robin Armstrong and Bobby Eberle as conservative,
Christian men. I do not think highly of race being such a priority
in any voting bloc as it appears to have been from the whispers
throughout the convention. I think both men would agree with me.
The discussion on the amendment
to Rule 43 was short, but impassioned. It was determined by a
committee of County GOP Chairmen that it would be illegal to hold
potential Republican candidates accountable by requiring them to
tell the voting public via questionnaire whether or not they agreed
with each plank of the Republican Platform. For this reason, a vote
on the amendment never came to the floor of the convention. It
should be mentioned here that candidates could also simply state
they were undecided on an issue under the amendment. I vehemently
disagree with the aforementioned committee’s findings. I believe it
is necessary for the unity of the Republican Party to know where our
slate of candidate’s stand on the Party platform. As a party, we
must ultimately speak with one voice, despite some of our
differences. Our platform reflects our beliefs and principles. We
need candidates who firmly believe in those beliefs and principles.
I also believe the amendment to Rule 43 would also serve as a device
by which we can hold said candidates accountable once elected. As a
born-again Christian and a Republican, I believe in integrity and
accountability. I wish more felt the same way, especially those in
leadership.
All in all, it was an honor to
be part of the State Convention again and I look forward to doing it
again in 2008!! I encourage anyone interested in being part of the
process of creating the Party Platform and building the Party from
the ground up to go to their Precinct Conventions held the night of
the primary when the polls close at the polling locations, and then
attend your Senatorial Convention and try to get elected to the
State Convention and, in Presidential election years, going to the
National Convention.

Readers Respond To Our
Recent Newsletters |
Joe,
I am writing in response to your
article on, "The Coalition For Texas" Is It Time For A Third Party
In Texas? ". I am opposed to third parties; that is how we got Bill
Clinton.
However, look at the "The Club
for Growth." They identify candidates who support fiscal
responsibility and smaller government, and then have the club
members support those candidates with contributions. Over time they
will weed out those Republicans who believe in BIG Government and
can't figure out right from wrong. While they focus on national
candidates, there is nothing to stop The Coalition For Texas from
backing candidates at the state and local level who stand for
similar principles. Hope this helps as you sort out what you are
going to do.
Missed you at the convention.

Joe,
I don't know why you would even
suggest that a third party is worthy of consideration. After all, we
have a tax and spend party and a tax and spend even more party. At
the moment, I don't know which is which, but I suspect that the
party in power always spends more.
In order for a thirty party to
be viable, a separate constituency would have to be identified. Then
promises to address some issue requiring more spending to ameliorate
the desires of that constituency would have to be made. After that
all the parties would put in a "promise bid" for that constituency.
The net result is inevitable increases in government spending.

Third parties bring in change,
but not usually the kind of change people want. Because of Ross
Perot, we got Clinton. I don't want another Clinton in office,
literally. She would be WORSE than the other one. I hope the
Republican Party gets its act together before 2008. Of course, you
are right. It is very frustrating for those of us conservatives to
watch supposed Republicans voting and acting like Democrats. The
back door deals have got to stop; we need statesmen and not
politicians in office. I applaud your courage.

Former SREC 18
Committeeman Michael Franks From Wharton, Texas Responds To Our
Pauken Letter |
Joe, WOW, excellent letter on Pauken's stance on the tax
bill. The grass roots are getting tired of being spoken to about how
great the party is and all the great things that our elected guys
are doing for us...when they pause to really see and look that the
size and scope of government is NOT decreasing at all, MAJOR slashes
in departments, agencies, and just the form and function of
government is not taking place. I think the day is finally coming
when we are not just going to blindly listen to great rah-rah
speeches and slather all over our elected gals/guys just because
they are ours. We are in control now. It is time to put that 30
years of "rhetoric" of ELIMINATING the "New Deal" and the "Great
Society" into action and into reality. NOT with just a few
"token" bills here and there, but REAL substantive total reform.
We need to get back to the
point in our party to where we really do believe that citizens in
our towns, communities, and in our schools can run ourselves if
there even WAS no State or Federal government telling us when,
where, and how to do things. At one time we, as conservatives
actually believed, organized, and started a movement for that cause
of the "Reagan revolution."
If our guys/gals do not set
that type of a bold agenda as a goal, then we will never achieve
that goal of returning our nation to the founders’ ideals. It is
MORE than just the "morality" or the "social" agenda we are working
for here. It is BOTH, but more so that we WILL have more religious
freedom if we FIRST change the function of government.
I do not see we are doing this.
Reagan ran saying he wanted to eliminate the Department of
Education. Our republicans of today do the total INVERSE, giving
them MORE power, money, etc.
We need to return education to
how it was done before government started to interfere to begin
with. In a "free society", which we no longer have, the state
wouldn't be running it to begin with.
I think most folks cannot see
nor fathom a nation actually existing and FUNCTIONING on a
day-to-day basis to where we run ourselves again. The role of
government is to protect our liberties and freedoms, NOT to take by
force the fruits of our labor then to rule over and dish it back out
to us.

Reader Ted Wood
Disagrees With Peggy Noonan's Assertions That Both Parties Stand Arm
In Arm And Spend--Or Does He? |
I am infinitely amazed when
seemingly intelligent people pony up Peggy Noonan as a writer to be
taken seriously. She mentions that both parties stand arm in arm and
spend.
What she fails to mention is
that her idol – Ronald Wilson Reagan – is the man who led this
country into the ruinous profligacy that we find ourselves in at
this time. She is nothing more than a Sycophant with a good
vocabulary. Reagan created more debt in 8 years than had been
created in the previous 200. The man who desires to be seen as his
heir-the execrable W – has a vice president that has said, on
numerous occasions, "debt doesn't matter." Between these two
intellectual midgets, we are now by far the largest debtor – and the
largest creator of debt – that the world has ever seen. So, please
think twice about trotting out Peggy Noonan in the future.
As for Henry Bonilla- please- I
am, again, amused that it has taken Republicans so long to see how
utterly inane and lightweight he is – and has been from the gate.
The truth is that the last heavyweight we had in Congress from this
area was HBG (Henry B. Gonzalez). You might not have agreed with
him, but his depth and love for this country was unquestioned.
As for a third party – great
idea – the first article on the platform should be to annex Mexico
and cure this insane immigration issue once and for all. The second
article should be to live within our means. I will give my total
support to a party with that platform.
- Ted Wood

A Reader Expresses Grave Concerns About The Republican Party |
|
I received your
newsletter this morning. Good read.
I don’t know if it
is time for a third party or not - but I tell ya’ what. This will be
the first year since I began voting in the 80s that I won’t be
voting the straight Republican ticket.
I can’t tell you for
how many elections before Bush II I felt queasy voting Republican
yet still felt I made the right decision. I can, however, tell you
that since Bush II I feel responsible for much of the mess we are in
now.
A Republican
president and congress for the last several years – what has it
gotten us. Opportunity squandered through arrogance, stubbornness,
and pride. Ugh.
I mean seriously,
with all the cr*p going on right now the President chooses this as
the time for spending time on a constitutional amendment banning gay
marriages. What happened to State’s Rights and small government?
Have we even solved
the immigration issue yet or have we just applied a Band-Aid?...and,
an expensive one at that. Is Iraq no longer important? If not, can
some of my friends come home please? Jeez, constitutional amendment
issues now!? A constitutional amendment praising motherhood couldn’t
be passed in this political environment.
I’m disgusted.
Kind Regards,

Antonio, TX

Joseph La Follette Of
San Benito, Texas Responds To "The Coalition For Texas", Is It Time
For A Third Party? Article In Last Week's Newsletter |
Instead of being
divisive, try unifying people under a platform of betterment for
all. Not bigger government, better government! Fear and bigotry
can only get you so far but a platform of unity will get you into
office.
Republicans need to
move towards a unifying message if they want to win in Deep South
Texas. The idea of a third party that extols fringe-minded idealisms
is a recipe for discord. How would you ever satisfy people who are
that distrustful of government that they won't even let their kids
attend public schools (remember what party started public
education)? Just try going back to the progressive message of the
party of Lincoln and you will have more success in an election:
equality, justice, and access of our elected officials. Many of us
in Cameron County are forced to vote democrat because the values
that the republicans cater to are those of the wealthy. How about a
little social justice, eh Joe? Why should only certain people get
all the benefits while others are left mystified and unaware of
their rights? Stop talking the points of the powerful beltway GOP
and spend some time trying to make a real revolution occur for us.
Nobody likes la
palanca [Straight vote for Democrats]. But we vote for it because it
does have some vestiges of progressivism. One of the most important
aspects of the success of the democrats in the valley is that they
give corn to their flock. What have the republicans done for us?
1. They cut
funding to Planned Parenthood because they don't like the fact that
this organization gives their clients truthful information. In the
valley, this is one of the only places for a woman to get decent
reproductive care including mammograms and pap smears. No one likes
the idea of having an abortion, but preventing the need for abortion
is far better than closing the doors on poor and middle-income
women.
Joe, I want you to
know that Planned Parenthood saved my wife's life through
preventative health screenings. Cancer is very scary for me. As a
youth, my best friend's mother died an unnecessary death because she
didn't get regular pap smears. Planned Parenthood found the cells in
my wife that would have grown into a malignancy and killed my
wife. They treated her for a very low cost. To not fund Planned
Parenthood is to lose my vote in November!
I hate abortion. I
hate abortion so much that I think that birth control should
be readily accessible for all consenting unmarried adults! Teaching
birth control saves lives and it is the lesser of two evils. Joe,
that's what an election is, too; it is a choice between the lesser
of two evils and unfortunately, homophobic, anti-poor, anti
free-will republicans are making up my mind. I personally would like
to see a more liberal republican party. Let the closet
segregationists that you want to recruit, vote in their synod as
they see fit.
2. They have
made enrolling in CHIP a big mess for parents who have to re-enroll
every six months and have to jump through hoops in order to get
their kids decent health insurance. If republicans would expand CHIP
enrollment to families below or at 250% FPL, I would be more likely
to vote republican.
3. Instead of
reforming the salaries at the top of the education system, they go
after teachers and assistants. School Boards should be the ones that
are reformed by Texas lawmakers, not teachers! It should be illegal
for a board member to run for re-election if his/her administration
led to poor performance! If the republicans would stop hating
teachers, I would be more likely to vote republican in November.
4. If
republicans would embrace a philosophy of ethics and push away the
unsavory lobbies that control Austin and Washington, I would be more
likely to vote republican.
5. If
republicans would leave the pulpit in the temple and stop meddling
in the bedroom, I would be more likely to vote republican. We
already have the defense of marriage act. We already have a state
ban on same sex unions. I would rather be prudent than a prude on
this issue. Let it die!
By the way, Madla
lost because progressive republicans like my own father who lives in
the Presidio area and other friends in West Texas gave him the
boot. Madla favored the elite and spent most of his time aligning
himself with the well off and the fringe groups that you want to
attract. He stabbed the trans-Pecos in the back every chance he
got!
I thank you for your
time and consideration.
Keep fighting the
good fight!

San Antonio Toll Party:
Joe Solis Rocks! |
|

Joe,
You ROCK! Thanks for
giving us credit for Casteel's defeat and for reaching out to all of
the grassroots groups to build a coalition to spank our government
when needed, like HB 3 and certainly a new toll tax on driving!
Count us in! Love all the articles, especially your gutsy letters to
the Party elite. They need to wake-up or they're gonna get the boot.
We affectionately refer to it within the San Antonio Toll Party as
the "Casteel Ripple Effect." We're toying with making up some
t-shirts with Casteel Ripple Ice Cream on the front and "Be part of
the ripple effect and dump the tollers" on the back! WE DO WANT
CHANGE, and we WANT IT NOW!

"The Republicrat" (A
Moderate Viewpoint) |
This is a series by an
anonymous political insider in Bexar County. The views of this
author do not represent the views of South Texas Republicans.
Immigration is the
hot button issue going into the November election. Why am I not
surprised that the two parties are manipulating the issue and using
it as a wedge among Hispanics and non-Hispanics, alike?
Of course, then
there is the Republicans even greater fear that gays will undermine
the sanctity of marriage and cause the divorce rate among
heterosexuals to soar out of control.
It could be
worse. We could have an influx of gay immigrants flooding the
border. Call out the National Guard!
Governor Perry is
playing to our worst fears with the proposal of the electronic
surveillance on the border. What an asinine idea using only
electronic surveillance to stop the flow of undocumented workers
into our country. Why place troops on the border as window dressing
and not allow them to interact with the border patrol? Can you say,
“reality show?”
So what about the
Republican Party of Texas at its recent convention demanding that a
wall be built on the border? Didn’t President Ronald Reagan talk
about tearing a wall down in Berlin? If History serves me correctly,
the wall protecting the Alamo didn’t stop the Mexican Army. Why
would a new wall at the border stop anyone from sneaking in?
Interesting
enough, immigration has been a source of contention as far back as
the turn of the century. In 1919, President Theodore Roosevelt
talked about his continual disdain for the "hyphenated-Americans."
To him it would bring the nation to its knees with all the arguing
and squabbling by various nationalities. Sound familiar?
Roosevelt also
advocated the compulsory learning of English by all those who came
to America for a better life. He even gave a five-year deadline to
do so. "English should be the only language taught or used in the
public schools," he once wrote. Too bad we haven’t followed that
advice. It would benefit those from Mexico and offer a better chance
of achieving the “American Dream.”
History has shown
us throughout the years since Roosevelt that this country has gone
through various periods where we attempted to limit certain
nationalities from migrating to America.
Today’s target is
Mexicans, not Arab terrorists. We don’t seem to have a problem with
Canadians, however. Is it a race issue?

the vast majority of immigrants came from Great Britain, Ireland and
Germany. From 1890 to 1910 the majority came from Southern and
Eastern Europe.
From 1905 to 1914
an average of more than a million aliens entered the U.S. every
year. Then it decreased for a while and eventually began picking up
speed as time went on.
Numerous
immigrants have experienced the backlash of America. Irish
Catholics, Chinese, Japanese, and Jews from Europe have felt the
brunt of discrimination.
As always many Americans
continue to fear that new immigrants will take jobs away from
Americans, like lettuce and cotton pickers, farm laborers and you
get the picture.
So what else is new? Immigrants
have been mandated to pass literacy tests, minimum mental, moral,
physical, and economic standards and the list goes on. And of
course, don’t forget the arbitrary government induced quotas that
have been enforced over the years. Again I pose the question, “Is
the current brouhaha about color?”
The Immigration Act of 1985
allowed most illegal aliens who resided in the U.S. continuously
since January 1, 1982, to apply for legal status. In addition, the
law prohibited employers from hiring illegal aliens and mandated
penalties for violations. So where did we go wrong since 1985? Why
haven’t the sanctions against employers ever been enforced?
Shouldn’t we once again allow
illegal aliens who have resided here for a number of years the
opportunity to apply for legal status without felony written all
over it?
You have one side demanding
retaliation, deportation and mandating criminal status, and on the
other side, you have advocates who say bring them all on. Both sides
need to take a breath and seriously address the problem instead of
pandering to the radicals on either extreme. Besides, why now? Here
is a hint. Does the 2006 election year mean anything to you?
Let me leave you with one last
fact. Forty-five percent of the 11 million illegal Mexicans who
have come across the border over the years entered this county
legally. Most let their visas expire.
That’s the moderate viewpoint. I AM the Republicrat.
