What Will Conservatives Do On Election Day? PREDICTION INSIDE!

Commentary by Joe Solis/South Texas Republicans

We are all over the map this election season. Based on recent conversations, many of us are disgusted with new business taxes, toll road plans, inconsistent leadership on immigration and a general consensus that our leaders are out of touch with the grassroots.

There is a lack of faith out there. That is it. That faith is missing this year.

Yes, the economic numbers look good, but that awful feeling in your stomach won’t go away. It is worse than a bad sinus infection in South Texas.

My prediction: Conservatives will get out and vote this November but they want to take someone down. I can feel it. They want to show the elites in our party that we have the ability to take out one of our own. This prediction is based on the level of disgust people are experiencing.

Many of the devoted unpaid grassroots activists I’ve spoken to recently are astonished by the level of apathy out there. It seems like our troops are tired and fed up with the whole game.

It is my humble belief that they really want to be inspired and motivated to take action.  Where is the torch they can follow?

My suggestion: Quit complaining about the officials you do not like. Get up and rally behind some of our tremendous officials and candidates out there. We have some really talented folks in this great state.

Host a small reception or hit your neighborhood with some “push cards”.

We could get wiped out if we stay home and sulk.

Yes, you can make a difference. Get up and move- NOW!!

(F.Y.I. I believe that Secretary of State Roger Williams should take a sabbatical from his non-partisan job in the next few weeks. We need a coach who can rally the troops in these crucial hours. This will never happen but it would sure be nice.)

Why are you running for this office?

The District Clerk’s office currently has ineffective leadership and needs change. I represent that change. I am a highly educated trained professional with management experience and strong leadership skills. I have the integrity and work ethic needed to follow policies and procedures in accordance with the laws.

What are the greatest strengths that you would/do bring to this office?

Honesty, Integrity, Education, Professionalism, Communication skills, and Program Management experience.

What do you consider the greatest challenges this office will face, now and in the future?

One of the greatest challenges would be to bring the courthouse technology standards up-to date for now and better prepare for the future.

If elected, how will you address them?

By modernizing our current technology in order to improve the record keeping systems in Bexar County. I would provide the leadership to embrace technology, not shy away from it, by providing training and education.

Give five names of campaign endorsement.

1. Red McCombs

2. Charlie Amato

3.  Gary Dudley

4.  Pam Julian

5.  Henry Bonilla

Why is the office you are seeking is important to the citizens of Bexar County and/or Texas?

The District Clerk’s office is important to the citizens of Bexar County because it is accountable to the taxpayers. The District Clerk is responsible for managing the personnel that process court documents and must be fiscally responsible for managing the District Clerk budget.

Can the efficiency of the office for which you are running be improved? If so, how will you improve it?

By making the courthouse information more accessible to the citizens of Bexar County.  Computer technology implementation will streamline the record keeping system to use tax dollars more wisely.

What are the key customer concerns of people using the office for which you are running and how can they best be addressed?

Ineffective management and leadership are the number one concern. And because of the ineffective management and leadership, courthouse documents are continually lost, misfiled, or never processed. The District Clerk must be held accountable for these inconsistencies because she is the elected official chosen by the public.

How many minorities are employed by the office and in what role, If under-represented, what will you do to improve hiring, retention and promotion of minorities?

I would adhere to the Equal Employment Opportunity laws.

If elected, what will be your top priority for your term in office?

To be fiscally responsible and accountable to the Citizens of Bexar County.

Judge Rene Diaz, Of 224th District Court Receives "2006 Honorary Young Lawyer Of The Year Award"

Judge Rene Diaz of the 224th District Court has received the “2006 Honorary Young Lawyer of the Year Award” from the San Antonio Young Lawyers Association (SAYLA) (http://www.sayla.org). This award is given annually by SAYLA to the local jurist who has contributed most to the professional development of young attorneys in San Antonio. The “Honorary Young Lawyer of the Year Award” will be presented to Judge Diaz at SAYLA’s Annual Judicial Reception, which will take place on November 2, 2006, at 5:30 P.M. at Club Giraud.

“Since taking the bench, Judge Diaz has helped SAYLA fulfill both of its main goals to help lawyers develop professionally and to serve our community,” said Bryan Lopez, an attorney with Cox Smith Mathews, Incorporated and the current president of SAYLA. SAYLA’s membership consists of approximately 300 attorneys. It is the only bar organization in San Antonio dedicated exclusively to the needs of young lawyers as well as community service and is one of twelve specialized local bar associations officially recognized by the San Antonio Bar Association.

“Earlier this year, Judge Diaz delivered a presentation to SAYLA called, ‘Top Ten Tips for Civil Litigators in Bexar County’ that was so well received by our members, we reprinted it in our monthly newsletter,” said attorney David Evans, the President-Elect of SAYLA. (See, http://www.sayla.org/news.htm  February ’06).

“Judge Diaz has given of his time and talent not only to help young attorneys but also to the community as a whole,” said Sylvia Cardona, a SAYLA board member and Regional Director of Texas Young Lawyers Association. (TYLA) (www.tyla.org). Just last week, Judge Diaz volunteered to help SAYLA teach high school students about constitutional rights. For more information, contact Diverse Media. 210-364-2684.

COMBS’ MAIN GOAL TO DE-POLITICIZE COMPTROLLER’S ROLE
 by Roy Maynard  (Source: SusanCombs.com)

The Texas comptroller’s office can be a valuable resource to both state and local officials, Republican candidate Susan Combs says, but one thing it shouldn’t be is political.

Ms. Combs, the current Texas Agriculture Commissioner, faces Democrat Fred Head in the Nov. 7 general election. There is no incumbent because Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn is running for governor.

Ms. Combs spoke with the Tyler Paper’s editorial board on Tuesday.

“The comptroller’s office collects taxes, yes, but also it provides data for the Legislature,” she said. “It gives out all the revenue estimates. It does independent fiscal notes on pieces of legislation. So it needs to be independent, rational, and above all it needs to not be political.”

Citing Ms. Strayhorn’s much-publicized battles with Gov. Rick Perry and other Republican leaders, Ms. Combs says the office has become highly politicized.

“Unfortunately, in the last several years, it has become intensely political,” she said. “And that’s been a great challenge for the very good employees there. It challenges the credibility of the data that comes out of that office. And that’s a shame, because that’s the main source of data for the state Legislature.”

She will work to de-politicize the office, she says, and make it more efficient.

She has fewer employees in the Texas Department of Agriculture now than when she started, she notes, even though the agency took on new duties and new personnel during her tenure.

“We did it by re-engineering every single process in the agency,” Ms. Combs said. “We streamlined and were able to save about 20 (full-time employee) slots. The comptroller’s office is bigger, and it could also benefit from a top-to-bottom evaluation.”

In order to get more done with fewer employees, she said, she will revamp the audit process.

“We need a new template for how we allocate our human capital, because we’re not getting any more,” she said.

Another change she’ll make is moving the comptroller’s administrative law judges, which decide disputes with the agency, out of the comptroller’s office and into the State Office of Administrative Hearings.

She’ll also focus on economic development.

“As agriculture commissioner, I helped bring 6,400 jobs to rural areas,” she said. “That may not sound like a lot, until you consider the impact that 40 jobs would have on a community of 2,000.”

One way she’ll help localities attract and keep jobs is with improved access to information.

“To bring jobs, you need a very good economic pitch,” Ms. Combs said. “A lot of the data necessary for that is already imbedded in the comptroller’s office. The office ought to be able to spit that out for you pretty quickly.”

The agency will be able to tell a city or a county what effect new jobs could have, or the effect of losing a business.

“The comptroller’s office will have the ability and will be able to give somebody like Tyler a great economic impact report,” she said.

“I have the experience, the vision and the leadership for this office, and I view public service as a high honor, and I hope for your vote.”

Schuylar Crist Set To Bring Victory For Conservatives In The Blue Northeastern U.S.!

Next Monday, I shall be on a plane headed somewhere in the Northeastern U.S. At this point, New York looks to be a strong possibility, but I could also end up in Connecticut, New Hampshire or maybe even Rhode Island. I have signed on for a 2 week leadership role for a campaign to ensure our victory!

At the time of this writing, I expect within the next 24-36 hours to learn my final travel and lodging arrangements.

Never fear! I will still be continuing the newsletter while I am out of state thanks to my trusty laptop. I will do my best to give you a firsthand look at what transpires from wherever I am as well in support of Conservative values.

I will be among nearly 5,000 volunteers across the country taking part in the Get Out The Vote program by the Republican National Committee.

I am looking forward to this new and exciting opportunity for me and will be sure to make the most of it.

Also at the time of this writing, there is a chance my mother will also join me in the program, whether it be for 2 weeks or 5 days.

I do know that the Republican National Committee is seeking more volunteers to deploy as part of their 72 Hour Task Force. Please click on the "IT'S Time For Victory!" Banner above if you would like to sign up for this truly amazing opportunity!

SPECIAL COMMENTARY BY SCHUYLAR CRIST!

We as Conservatives MUST stand up and be counted!

We MUST hold our elected officials accountable and raise up qualified Conservatives!

We MUST Not settle for the status quo, becoming complacent!

We MUST lift up our truly Conservative candidates and office holders!

We MUST NOT abandon South Texas and the Nation to the Liberals!
_______________________________________________

I am Precinct Chair for #2076 in Bexar County, and as all of you know, I am also the Media Director for South Texas Republicans, PAC. I am disheartened at the apparent apathy and complacency of Conservatives in South Texas, particularly in Bexar County. What happened to having the courage of one's convictions? We only fail ourselves, when we fail to stand for what is RIGHT! We have a wonderful group of CONSERVATIVE candidates, yet block walking logs remain empty. Candidate's campaign yard signs fill the rooms in HQ, and phone bank cell phones (at PARTY EXPENSE) lay on a table. We have taken initiatives no one else has, but we cannot do it without YOU! We have provided the tools, we have provided the information....but it is up to YOU South Texas to use what you have been given. We can take NOTHING for granted. We have to fight for everything we have. There is no reason at all to fly the white flag.

By betraying our values, we betray our nation! If we do not get our posteriors in gear, we will lose the fight to the Liberals. We cannot afford to put our heads in the sand! If we do...it leaves our backsides vulnerable to the inevitable whuppin' those backsides will receive. If we lose this election...when we look to point the finger of blame, we need do nothing but look directly into the mirror!

The Ugly Golden Goose Of Capitalism Vs. 'The Sausage Factory'

By John Merrifield,
Professor of Economics
Director, Entrepreneurial Conservatism Institute

October 16th, 2006

Civic life is full of difficult choices. When should we trust the politics of the ‘Sausage Factory’ to address the perceived faults of capitalism (º freedom to choose and free enterprise)? ‘Sausage Factory’ is a popular metaphor for legislatures; like sausage, you do not want see laws being made. The lawmaking process bears little resemblance to the civics lesson on government in action.

So-called political accountability to the public is non-existent beyond the tiny fraction of issues that surface as major election issues. For the vast majority of public policy issues, accountability exists only to the special interests that lobby on them. Policies created by and for special interests are the sausage links of the factory. Though such policies often cripple the golden goose, the results are often blamed on ‘evil capitalism’, rather than politics.

Some of you may doubt the golden goose label. Look at the Fraser Institute Economic Freedom Index. Countries that inhibit free enterprise are poorer than those that don’t. Read “The Commanding Heights” (1998 by Yergin and Stanislaw). Countries that loosened the restrictions on economic activity accelerated growth rates. In lagging countries it is typically very difficult to start a business. It takes years worth of paperwork in many cases! Yes!!! Why do such restrictions persist? Because existing businesses used their political clout to create laws that block the start-up of competitors. Much economic exploitation that is widely blamed on ‘evil capitalism’ occurs only because of government policies that stifle competition. We have such laws too, but we still have much more economic freedom than most countries. Our prosperity depends on at least keeping the economic freedom we still have.

One key trait of leaders is the ability to recognize limitations, especially limitations of the political process. The best solution to a lot of problems is to get the government out of the way. The biggest reasons why the golden goose of capitalism is ugly to many people are lack of economic education and government interventions that go beyond securing private property.

American Companies Can Outrace Anyone In The New Global Economy If  America’s Trading Partners Don’t Puncture Their Tires Through Excessive Bureaucratic Meddling.

By Luke Legate, Austin, Texas

Unfortunately, that is not always the case, particularly in Europe , where the European Commission is using its power to dictate how Americans do business. EC regulators have targeted Coca-Cola, Intel and other companies, and in 2001 they blocked the merger of two American firms — GE and Honeywell — despite the fact that U.S. officials had already approved the deal. Microsoft, one of the great American success stories of the past century, is facing increasing pressure from EC bureaucrats who seem more concerned with protecting the company’s competitors than with ensuring fair and open competition in the marketplace. Microsoft may even have to delay shipping its new Vista operating system to Europe until it figures out how to satisfy the commission’s vague demands.

This issue is about more than Microsoft. It’s about making sure that all American exporters are treated fairly in Europe and elsewhere. It’s about allowing consumers, not regulators, to decide what happens in the marketplace. It’s about national sovereignty and the rule of law in the 21st century global economy. And it’s about basic democratic ideals. American business owners can contact their congressional representatives if an American bureaucrat oversteps his or her bounds. But American exporters have no recourse if they are unfairly targeted by unelected foreign bureaucrats.

Today it’s Microsoft, Intel and GE. Tomorrow it could be a small South Texas business trying to export its products to Europe. Tell your congressional representatives to insist that American exporters be allowed to compete on a level playing field. When that happens, American companies and foreign consumers both will win.

Truth Be Tolled Documentary Spreading Like Wildfire

The grassroots are turning out in droves to view a documentary, Truth Be Tolled (http://truthbetolled.com), made by San Antonio Filmmaker, William Molina, with the premiere drawing nearly 300 people in San Antonio, another showing at Trinity University with another scheduled at UTSA this Wednesday. The first screening in La Vernia drew over 200 with two more screenings scheduled this week. With a screening in Austin, and more coming in Houston and Dallas, along with all the counties in the path of the Trans Texas Corridor, the buzz is catching, voters are getting informed, and are motivated to vote accordingly. Folks outside Texas have seen it, too, in Ohio and in Indiana where they're fighting the I-69 extension of the Trans Texas Corridor that will eventually pass through their state. I've gotten calls from Idaho and Nevada on this issue. The tollers can run, but they can't hide. One way or another, the grassroots are finding out the truth and the "throw the bums out" sentiment is spreading.

Toll Party in the News

Thanks to Commissioner Lyle Larson's release of data release of data showing nearly $10 billion in squandered state highway funds for earmarks totally unrelated to transportation, the tollers excuses for the the largest tax increase in Texas history (these toll roads) are evaporating. Nobody believes we're out of money. We've been sold a bill of goods by fiscally irresponsible, arrogant, overbearing government who is about to pay the price at the ballot box November 7.

Our release of candidate endorsements is also making headlines with a press conference for Republican Nelson Balido who is mounting a strong challenge to incumbent toller Joaquin Castro. Here's a taste of what other tollers can expect to have said about them:

"Folks are tired of the deceit, double talk, and election year proclamations. Politicians have realized it's political suicide to be FOR Perry's version of tolls, so it's become fashionable to say they're against tolls. Our citizens group is on the march to reveal who are true allies in this fight and who are the counterfeits.

"The legislature, including Joaquin Castro, turned a deaf ear to the fierce public opposition to their toll road policies. Nelson Balido is the right choice to LEAD District 125."

Read about it here and Castro camp gets desperate and starts breaking the law, ON CAMERA.

"The Republicrat" (A Moderate Viewpoint)

This is a series by an anonymous political insider in Bexar County. The views of this author do not represent the views of South Texas Republicans.

The political goings-on this past week in the Democratic Party sounds like a replay of the previous week. Call it déjà vu, all over again. But read on, it gets good. There are a lot more juicy tidbits to share with the readers this week and so little space.

In our last episode, Alice Guerra, the spokes person for judge candidate Peter Sakai hit the airwaves on the internet losing her cool in a taped phone conversation with R.G. Griffing, Editor of the highly conservative San Antonio Lightning Internet Newspaper.

That tiff was in reference to a Republican judge showing up to Democratic judge candidate Peter Sakai’s fundraiser last month. I referenced it as a non-story.

This past week R.G. Griffing once again attacked another woman, this time, Bexar County Democratic Chair Carla Vela for of all things, copyright infringement.

He even threatened to sue the party. Whatever!!! R.G. must really think that we have money. I say to R.G., go to the Republican Party if you want big money for a King’s ransom.

He badgered her, harassed her, and tried to intimidate her into confessing to sins apparently she didn’t even commit.

Her offense was that the Democratic blogger posted an article from the SA Lightning written by a Lightning commentator and altered it and took off the byline of the writer. R.G. blames Carla since she is the Chair.

The true culprit is Steve Walker, the blogger, who eventually printed a retraction and deleted the article from the website. Walker, you may remember is the infamous Balcones Heights Councilman who has recently shown up on all the TV stations and talk shows talking about red-light cameras and now an ordinance in Balcones Heights to keep child molesters out of the city.

Months back, ironically, it was his incendiary emails catching the interest of the Lightning’s attention and a local talk show. He is not new to controversy. It appears he is back hitting the circuit. Something tells me his 15 minutes of fame is near its end. Way to go Councilman.

While he takes good pictures, he just nearly knocks you over trying to take them. Here is some advice: Go to etiquette school when you are not hogging the television cameras.

Latest rumor emanating from the Eastside is that a local Democratic Party official is out campaigning for Congressman Lamar Smith in the churches. Within the Party, that is a no-no. Since he is an African-American, he is able to do so at will especially since reports say he is an ordained minister.

With that kind of access into African-American churches on the Eastside, he has the opportunity to attempt to convince the community to go with Smith.

I also hear the Eastside community is outraged because they have an Independent candidate running against Smith. This rumor has been out there for weeks but now it is coming to a head as we near Election Day.

Speaking of R.G.,. (again!) he appears to be hot on the trail of a vandal who recently destroyed Republican state rep. candidate Nelson Balido’s booth of some kind. The spotlight shines on SA Councilwoman Delicia Herrera’s former staffer, Leticia Cantu who is the suspected culprit. Apparently, she resigned from Herrera’s staff and is now paid by State Rep. Joaquin Castro as a paid volunteer. It never ends.

Now let’s move on to other continuing news. Word is that Judge Tom Rickoff contributed a $1,000 check to his buddy Wayne Christian who is running for the bench his sister once held until she was caught in scandal with former SA Councilman David Garcia who later became her husband. (bipartisan affair) She also lost her seat to Judge David Rodriguez.

Must be nice to run for office and donate money to other candidates. Shades of Tom DeLay. Is that smug or what? Even though Rickoff the “Beast” garnered the endorsement of the local newspaper, Barbie the “Beauty” still has a good chance of beating him at the polls.

A number of Republicans are showing up to her fundraisers and some are even hosting them, so they tell me. That includes her Republican Treasurer, Mike Beldon.

Speaking of endorsements, apparently the right wing fury over that Republican judge hanging out with Peter Sakai didn’t hurt Sakai very much as he received a glowing endorsement from the Express-News.

It helps when you are the media darling during an election season. On the other hand, it seems Judge Rene Diaz lost his endorsement over the plagiarizing incident involving Judge Karen Pozza to Democratic opponent Gloria Saldana.

No one is surprised that perennial candidate Milton Fagin didn’t receive the endorsement from the local newspaper. Duh! How many times has he run anyway,10 or 12?

I predict that in the next election we will see his pathetic face running around again looking for votes. Fagin reminds me of a young man who tried to woo me in high school during my junior year, many years ago.

The guy was awkward, boring and totally a loser. He kept coming back for more. He couldn’t take a hint and apparently Milton can’t take a hint either. When will he understand that his useless and unnecessary campaigns are forcing others to waste time and money.

And certainly no surprise to hear Tim Ybarra was not recognized either. What does he look like again? Then there is the testosterone twins who didn’t make the cut. Now that is a complete shocker. Who would have ever guessed?

Did we miss anybody? Well hopefully that is it for another week. Hope next week brings better news.

Final note: There is endless scuttlebutt that the Republicrat is Joe Solis. Local Democrats claim that Joe Solis writes this column with information from three or four sources in Bexar County.

All of this is pure silliness and it makes me question the common sense of my Democratic Party.  Why would they think that? My writing style is very different from Joe’s (It is better since I tell a good story) and I am funnier.

Only one person writes the Republicrat and only Joe Solis knows who I am. Not his wife or my closest friends even know that I write it. I must admit it is difficult not telling everyone that I write it. Like Joe, I am sworn to secrecy.

Those of you conspiracy theorists should take a deep breath. Let me close by sharing with you that Editor Joe Solis tells me that the Republicrat continues to be his most popular segment. Thank you Mr. De Mille, I am ready for my close up!

News Flash...

just minutes before I send this to press. Rumor is spreading that Bexar County Democratic Party Chair Carla Vela has lost total control of the Party. The word is she called an illegal meeting of the Precinct Chairs from Precinct 4 to oust Deputy Chair Vincent Garcia for alleged misconduct.

Activists in the Party are grumbling that she has “lost it.” I reported recently that Carla changed the locks on the Party doors to keep Vincent and his wife, Mary, the then acting Executive Director of the Party, from entering.

Now staffed with numerous volunteers who apparently have no clue how to run the office, the local Bexar county Democratic Party is in complete disarray a week before early voting.

Just when you think, it is good to be a Democrat, implosion. We will follow up next week, once we hear how the meeting went.

That is the moderate viewpoint. I AM the "Republicrat"!
