Beltway blindness: "The most startling concession was to see The Washington Post finally admit supply-side economics works: 'Lower tax rates on wages do boost the labor supply; lower tax rates on investment may boost savings; more labor and more capital mean more economic output.'"

Dear Kerry supporter: We’ve connected now, so you can speak openly. I can see the pain in your eyes. I understand. You so-wanted to beat Bush in this election. Beating Bush was more important than almost anything else in your life. You don’t like his arrogance, you don’t like the way he talks, you don’t like the way he walks, and you constantly feel like he’s smirking at you. What’s not to hate? And on top of all this, he stole that election in Florida, right?

Three cheers for Kerry “Unity” billed itself as “the largest and most diverse gathering of journalists in the United States.” Not quite. It’s an alliance made up of the Asian American Journalists Association, National Association of Black Journalists, National Association of Hispanic Journalists and the Native American Journalists Association. That doesn’t represent diversity, unless “diversity” is now defined as “only minorities need apply.”

What's right with the electoral college: "It happens every four years. The country is seized by what can only be called Fear of the Electoral College. The punditry and the professoriate begin the quadrennial chant: This is no way to elect a president! It's unfair, undemocratic, illogical, and the sky is about to fall! We're all supposed to View With Alarm. Or maybe amend the Constitution."

New Studies Justify Need for Taxpayer Protections: "Ronald Reagan said, 'Government may protest that it never gets the money it needs, but it always manages to find a need for the money it gets.' "

John Kerry Endorsements: Foreign Leaders and Osama bin Laden: "It is puzzling that Democrats think Americans should be impressed that anti-American foreign leaders support Kerry. As dubious as Kerry's claims of foreign endorsements may be, there is at least one foreign leader who hopes for a Kerry-Edwards win in November. However, even the two Johns are smart enough not to brag about having this foreign leader's support. Of whom am I speaking? Osama bin Laden. "

Democrat Sen. Zell Miller to Be GOP Keynote Speaker: "Sen. Zell Miller of Georgia, a Democrat who long ago endorsed President Bush for re-election, will deliver the keynote address at the Republican National Convention, party officials announced Thursday."

McClellan Condemns Kerry's 'False' Attack: "Kerry and company are screaming about Swift Boat Veterans for Truth's $550,000 ad campaign in a mere three states, but White House spokesman Scott McClellan pointed out again today that Kerry has benefited from $62 million in ads spewed nationwide by Bush-hating pro-Democrat groups. "

Bossie Exposes 'The Many Faces of John Kerry': "'One person's terrorist is someone else's freedom fighter.' Sounds like Michael Moore or Osama bin Laden, doesn't it? Instead, these words are straight from the lips of John Kerry, the candidate whose agenda the media establishment refuses to reveal to you."

Report: Member of Kerry's National Legal Team Faces Solicitation: "A member of Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry's national legal team received a citation on accusations he solicited a prostitute, according to broadcast reports. "

US troop shift: A tale of two cities : "President Bush's announcement this week of major US troop realignment has several European towns scrambling."

Intelligence reforms hit resistance : "The push for intelligence reform has hit substantial resistance on Capitol Hill in recent days - raising questions about whether changes in the US intelligence community recommended by the 9/11 commission will be able to survive the legislative process reasonably intact. Anti-GOP Group Publishes RNC Delegate List; Urges 'Local Contact' : "The Washington, DC chapter of the leftist Independent Media Center has published a partial list of delegates to the Republican National Convention on its web site. The list includes names, home addresses, and telephone numbers as well as the hotel of each delegate for the New York convention. The IMC says that its objective is to 'supply anti-RNC groups with data on the delegates to use in whatever way they see fit.'"

Congressman splits with GOP, calls war 'mistake': "A top Republican congressman has broken from his party in the final days of his House career, saying he believes the U.S. military assault on Iraq was unjustified and the situation there has deteriorated into 'a dangerous, costly mess.' "

Bush Turns to Part-Time Troops : "President Bush proposed new educational benefits for National Guardsmen and reservists on Wednesday, using a campaign appearance here to appeal to part-time troops disillusioned by extended tours of duty in Iraq. "

The ACLU is at it again: "The American Civil Liberties Union, which is inclined to believe it not only invented integrity, but holds the patent, has decided it is too ethical to worry about whether or not it is subsidizing terrorism. "

Liars Kerry and McGreevey: "The problem with two differentiated parties (although still not as differentiated as some Christian conservatives would like) is that when a governor or president is a scoundrel, voters ideologically aligned with him don't have a good choice. They either have to vote for a person without character or for someone personally right but ideologically wrong."

A Kerry Court would be way left. It is a political reality nowadays that the courts, and in particular the U.S. Supreme Court, trump the democratic process. Regardless of whether the Framers of the Constitution intended it to be so or not, we live in a de facto judge-run oligarchy. No number of laws — or votes — can overcome a court bent on enforcing its own views in the name of federal (or state) "constitutional rights."

Kerry: Cambodia Mission Top Secret: "John Kerry's presidential campaign claimed on Tuesday that his Christmas 1968 mission into Cambodia was top, top secret - and that's why there are no documents that verify the implausible claim."

Kerry to Break Tradition and Campaign During GOP Convention: "Of course, Kerry thinks he has a good reason: 'He's a member of the American Legion,' Stephanie Cutter, Kerry's communications director told the New York Times. 'He was invited to come address the group, and we felt like it was an important speech to give and an important time to give it.'"

Exit exams yield a 'graduation gap' : "But in today's era of accountability, where schools are held more responsible for student achievement, few take such assumptions for granted anymore. That's why more and more states are adopting high school exit exams to ensure their students are being adequately prepared."

Kerry shifts right on security : "As Sen. John Kerry criticizes President Bush's sweeping redeployment plan for US troops - and surrogates for both campaigns trade increasingly harsh attacks over the candidates' service during Vietnam - this latest round of sparring belies a fundamental reality: When it comes to defense and foreign policy, Senator Kerry and Mr. Bush agree on far more than they disagree on."

Candidate Harkin Stretches the Truth : "If running for president is a game of truth or consequences, then a lot of Democratic Sen. Tom Harkin's critics would like to see him face the consequences. "

posted at 6:56 AM

Democrats would do better to focus on the future. : "We wish this Presidential election had nothing at all to do with Vietnam. There were good people who served and good people who didn't, good people who supported the war and good people who protested it. What happened really shouldn't be an issue more than 30 years later unless you lie about it. So why do the Democrats keep bringing Vietnam up, and to their own detriment?"

Kerry Attacks Bush on Troop Withdrawal Plan: "Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry on Wednesday said President Bush's 'vaguely stated' and 'hastily announced' plan to withdraw 70,000 troops overseas came at the wrong time and was done in the wrong way. "

Kerry’s Evidence: Deftly, the Democrats have managed to exclude hard truth from their political campaigns. The most recent presidential campaigns are the best evidence. Nowhere can we find any real evidence upon which to make our judgements.

The Cambodian candidate:Only a few short weeks ago, John Kerry was enjoying the temperate climate and familiar old stones of his native Boston. But now, as if in a "Twilight Zone" nightmare, he finds himself stumbling about, half lost in the steamy jungles of the Mekong Delta. It's 1968 again, or is it 1969?

Tax burden politics: Early on Thursday morning last week, Republican congressional staffers began receiving telephone calls from journalists asking about the new report from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO). Their immediate reaction: What report? It was news to them that the CBO for the past three months had been working on a study that would provide valuable ammunition for Sen. John Kerry's presidential campaign.

More light, less heat: This debate grows tedious: When the vice president of the United States touched down here in Arkansas the other day, he went down his list of talking points with accustomed dispatch. Nobody ever accused Dick Cheney of being some kind of touchy-feely romantic. Which may be one of the more assuring things about him in these dangerous times. Say what you like about the guy, he's not cute. (Unlike, say, John Edwards.) The essence of his stump speech was, "Sometimes the other team is stuck in a pre-9/11 mentality."

The UN and Old Europe are worse than you think: Jed Babbin convincingly argues that the U.S. needs to construct a new foreign policy paradigm. We can no longer afford, he says, to be hamstrung by the likes of France, Germany, and the Third World despots that dominate the EU and the UN.

Convention Protest Leader Won't Renounce Violence: A leader of one of the major protest groups planning to disrupt the GOP convention said Monday she will not instruct her members to refrain from violent attacks against New York City police, delegates or city residents during a planned 250,000-person march the night before the convention.

How McGreevey's 'Sleaze' Will Hurt Kerry and Help Bush: New Jersey Gov. James McGreevey's outrageous attempt to win sympathy as a confused "gay American" instead of admitting he is a corrupt American will hurt John Kerry and help President Bush, suggests Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia's Center for Politics.

GOP Eyes Possible Mass. Senate Race:Massachusetts Republicans, while supportive of President Bush’s re-election, are mindful of the opportunity created should John Kerry beat him in November’s election: the state’s first Senate vacancy in two decades and a chance to break the Democratic monopoly on its 12-member delegation in Congress.

Bush goes on offense : By going after Kerry on a somewhat inside-the-beltway issue - with an ad that juxtaposes his promise to "immediately reform the intelligence system" with his 76 percent absence rate at public Senate intelligence committee meetings - the Bush campaign is showing that it won't leave any potential Kerry weakness unexploited.

posted at 7:07 AM

Bush goes on offense : For now, though, with the president fighting to gain an edge against Democratic nominee John Kerry, the Bush message remains as much anti-Kerry as pro-Bush. Attack of the week: Senator Kerry's credibility on intelligence reform.

When Charley hit Florida, Kerry should have said, "Send me." : For those questioning his political motives in responding so quickly, Mr. Bush said simply: "If I didn't come, they would've said we should have been here more rapidly."

A teachers union's dishonest study of charter schools.: It is not unusual for interest groups to issue misleading reports that further their political agenda. And for this reason, newspapers generally ignore them, treat them with great skepticism, or make sure they vet the study with independent observers.

U.S. July Output Up; Factories Run Faster:U.S. industrial output advanced in July, as American factories operated at their highest capacity in more than three years, a Federal Reserve report on Tuesday showed.

John Kerry Quietly Unveils Middle Class Tax Hike: John Kerry has long campaigned on a promise to raise taxes on Americans earning more than $200,000 per year while preserving President Bush’s cuts for average Americans. Kerry quietly broke that promise this week with an under –the –radar plan that would raise taxes on the middle class.

Congress must heed taxpayers' concerns:Congress is notorious for passing new laws with little consideration of how they will affect American taxpayers. A case in point: the McCain-Lieberman Climate Stewardship Act, which failed to come to a vote in the U.S. Senate recently (and managed to take class action reform down with it), but will likely emerge again soon.

GOP Goes After Kerry on Intel : Republicans came out with guns blazing in their latest ads against Democratic presidential candidate Sen. John Kerry (D-MA). The TV spots highlight his record in the Senate on matters of intelligence. The commercial that began airing Monday features Kerry saying that he would "immediately reform the intelligence system."

posted at 12:06 PM

Role and influence of documentaries remains a big unknown : Many observers are also wondering if the Kerry-Edwards team will benefit from the emergence of film's unwanted stepchild, the documentary that has escaped from the art-film houses and obscure cable channels to play to millions.

posted at 7:26 AM

A Road map to an ownership society:Sen. John Kerry has begun to elaborate on the economic agenda that he presented in just a few lines during his speech at the Democratic National Convention. However, he fails to realize that the burden of a tax increase on the "upper 2 percent" will fall disproportionately on the small businessmen and women who create more than two-thirds of all new jobs.

posted at 7:15 AM

Stem cell debate is riddled with dishonesty: John Kerry has repeatedly spoken of President Bush's "ban" on stem cell research. Kerry knows very well it isn't a "ban" or that Bush isn't "shutting down" research. But "ban" is a powerfully emotional word. It has more impact on swing voters than "allowing private research, but not using taxpayer money for work on stem cell lines derived after Aug. 9, 2001."

Bloomberg Ignores Menino's Warning as Convention Riots Loom:New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg intends to allow anarchists with a track record of violence to gather on streets and sidewalks near the Republican National Convention in two weeks, despite warnings from Boston Mayor Thomas Menino that Bloomberg's plans are "a recipe for disaster."

Democrat Attacks Help Swift Boat Veterans for Truth Raise Money: Thanks to favorable reception of their TV ad, and especially the publicity caused by the Kerry forces' attempts at censorship, Swift Boat Veterans for Truth has raised a whopping $400,000 from about 8,000 contributors nationwide.

Harkin: Cheney Comments 'Cowardly': Sen. Tom Harkin pushed the name-calling in the presidential race to a new level, calling Vice President Dick Cheney a coward for not serving in Vietnam and cowardly for his criticism of John Kerry.
